What to Look for in a Small Refrigerator

When looking to buy a small refrigerator keep in mind that they are not all built equal. Sure, at first glance a refrigerator is a refrigerator but once it is yours, and especially if it is your only source of refrigeration, there will be little details that might make you wish you would have given more consideration to the specifics of the design of the inside rather than how it looks on the outside.

Size and Space

Obviously a small refrigerator will be different from your standard sized refrigerators beyond the number of cubic feet listed on the box. There are, however, many options similar to a typical refrigerator but on a smaller scale and it is the compact build of the smaller appliance that makes it that much more important to pay attention to detail.

First off, since we are already on the subject, realize the actual amount of space you have available if you are going to buy a small refrigerator solely for its miniature stature. Convenient in tight quarters and in transporting, a mini refrigerator can only hold a limited amount of stuff. So be wary of what the purpose this unit will serve. If it is a small beverage refrigerator you are looking for, keep in mind how many people it will serve so you don't get something that is too small needs constant refilling. If it is your only refrigerator then the smallest of units won't be much use either. Figure out what the refrigerator is for and what contents it will be cooling and you are half way to buying the right refrigerator.

Shelves and Organization

The second half has to do with the more detailed specifications of the unit. The interior design will determine how effectively the refrigerator can be stuffed with groceries or drinks. Pay attention to the shelves design and the limitations to the adjustability of the shelving levels. Usually, more mobile shelves will cost a little more but it can be an essential quality for some purposes.

Speaking of shelves, notice the material it is made of. Glass shelves that are see through makes it easier to recognize and clean spots. Sliding or removable shelves are much easier to clean since they can be pulled out of the unit. The shelves will vary by model and is one of the key factors in determining how effectively the space can be used to cool the things that need cooling.

Beyond shelves, other organizational components matter a lot too. Especially on the door because that is where a lot of usable space can either be wasted or added. It is nice to be able to keep things organized in such a small space but you don't want to waste all the space on shelves and trays that are not necessary. You don't want door space that only fit a particular shape or sized condiment bottle, nor do you want built in ice trays that take up space when you don't have any intention of making ice. However, these things are extremely useful in organizing and saving space if it properly fits your needs. The soda can dispensers can be a big time space waster for people who oppose aluminum packaged drinks.

Freezer

Also, a freezer component is another thing to consider. If you intend on stocking up on frozen dinners and such, consider something more effective than the typically tiny freezer compartments that come with small refrigerators. There are dual purpose compact units that are small refrigerator freezers where the entire unit can be a freezer or refrigerator. If you only need a freezer this is a great unit to have. Once it is retired of its freezing service it can be turned to refrigerator mode and be used to keep drinks. Most freezers are top mounted for energy saving purposes and as a little trick, keeping flat items like frozen dinners immediately under the freezer compartment is the same as keeping it inside the freezer compartment.

Energy Consumption

Energy savings is quite important and for that reason it is worth the effort to take note of the thermostat. Most refrigerators, even large units, have a simple knob with numbers. A better thermostat is digital and allows the user to set the target temperature. This can save a pretty penny in energy costs.

An energy star small refrigerator can cost under $100 to as much as $500 brand new. Most people use a mini refrigerator because of limited kitchen space in small apartments or tight living quarters like dorm rooms. For these temporary situations a low end, cheap small refrigerators will serve just fine. For long term uses such as a bar, a higher end model is better built to last many years. Knowing what you need the appliance for is the first step to getting exactly what you need from it. And now you already know what to look for in a small refrigerator.
