Cocktail parties can range from semi-casual to extremely formal. Before heading to the mall to pick out a new dress, your first order of business is to figure out exactly how formal the cocktail party will be that you plan to attend.

The easiest way is to ask the hosts. However, that is not always feasible or can sometimes be tacky if you don't know them well. Instead of asking, you can take a clue from the invitation. If you got the invitation via an email or a call, you can assume that the cocktail party is more semi-formal. On the other hand, if you got an invitation in the mail and it's printed on high-quality paper, you can assume it is more formal. The location should give you a clue too. A backyard party is normally more casual than a ballroom event. Another thing to consider is that if the cocktail party is for a charity or benefit, you should assume it will be a more formal atmosphere.

While little black dresses can sometimes be cliché, a cocktail party is the perfect destination to break out your little black dress. If you are shopping for a new dress, pick one that is between mid-thigh and tea-length. You don't want to wear a full-length dress to a cocktail party. And yes, black is the best color to go with if you are purchasing a new dress. It's slimming and appropriate for all evening occasions.

Though every woman might be wearing a cute dress, you can really make a statement with fabulous accessories.

The first accessory you should add is a handbag. The handbag should be stylish and add a dash of glitz and glamour to your look. A clutch that is embellished with rhinestones, crystals or sequins is a great idea. If that's too glitzy for your tastes, then glossy patent or metallic leather is a good choice.

Next comes the jewelry. Start with a great pair of drop earrings in diamonds, gemstones and crystals. Next you should add one real statement piece. Whether you choose a big cocktail ring, a thick cuff bracelet, or a chunky colorful necklace, that's up to you.

Finish up with a fantastic pair of shoes. High-heel slingbacks are a classy selection. Peep-toe pumps are also very popular. You should also coordinate your shoes with your handbag for a sophisticated look.
