Why Dance?

Did you know you could salsa, swing, and tango any day in New York City? Both guys and girls, young and old, couple or single can have fun is this rising social scene. Most places offer a free lesson with admission, and yes ladies get in free or half price to most Salsa places. In addition for those of us that want the exercise and hate the gym this may be it. Here is a quick breakdown of where to go, where to learn etc.

Every day you could be dancing so here are a few calendars for NYC of places to go:

Tango: http://www.newyorktango.com/

My most favorite is the Lafayette Grille, fantastic food, beautiful paintings on the walls and great teachers and music. Nice social scene and ladies no hassling, dance when you want to with whom you want to.

Salsa: http://salsanewyork.com/calendar.htm

More invigorating and demanding on your hips. A younger crowd and a lot closer. You can definitely let loose with the girls and have a total blast sipping drinks and dancing the night away.

Many places like LQ include the dinner in the admission and ladies we get in for free.

If you want to learn I really liked Eddie Toores and his wife's classes. The classes are different days and span beginner to advanced. There is a balanced amount of males and females so as a girl you do not have to stand around waiting but get to dance all the time. So check it out, don't get scared by the flashy website.

Swing: I don't have a calendar but take a few lessons at dance Manhattan, mingle with the crowd and you will be sure to know where to go.

Have fun!!!

Let's talk about places to take lessons. There are plenty of studios you can start out at and find the teaching style you enjoy the best. My favorite couple for tango instruction is Angeles and Michael; they are wonderful in their passion for the dance, teaching and each other. I had a lot of fun learning from them. For those of you in NJ they mostly teach there now so check them out at http://www.tangoblivion.com/.

For all sorts of classes, where I think the swing crew is the best but they get all the way up to waltz http://www.dance-manhattan.com/

In addition there is http://www.meetup.com/ the social utility that has plenty of dance clubs in your area not only NYC. In NYC specifically the Swing and Tango clubs are particularly involved and let their members know of the different happenings.

Hope that helped those of you interested in dance as I am. I will be posting shortly more about the specifics of each, in addition to other dances.
