What to do with Old Cell Phones
55Second Life to Cell Phones
The chances are good that you have an old cell phone sitting around the house. We all have ruined them, they go thru the wash, been dropped in a puddle in a rainy day while you were waiting for the bus, been taken for a ride down a water slide, been splashed by that jerk at the pool, taken for a ride in a kayak, or just ended up in the toilet while you were partying one night. You have a cell phone that needs a new purpose. What to do with old cell phones? We all have them and usually send them to a recycle or throw them out. But what if we wanted to hold on to these old phones. We did love our phone as it was our connection to our loved ones, a source of information, internet access, instant message, camera, calendar, a photo album, diary, voice notes to oneself, music source and movie camera and so much more. Perhaps you just love the rings that you associated with certain people? Or you used yours to sneak the answers during a test back before Professeurs were wise to the practice. Memories are associated with our phones and at times it is hard to get rid of a phone when we have so many memories attached.
Whatever the case you have not wanted to get rid of your phone here are some fun solutions or reasons to hold onto your phone all the while giving it a new purpose in your life. And these are green recycle idea. Check that out you are using your old technology to live more Green.
Second Life to Cell Phones
1. As coasters for a Tiki Party (see image below)
I love a good Tiki party. One night we had some guests, tiki drinks and used our old phones as coasters / conversation pieces. It was a funny way to recall old cell phone mishaps and everyone had a funny story about how they destroyed their old cell or accidently dialed a wrong number, calling the wrong person when they had too much to drink.
2. Paper Weight
As a kid I remember using rocks as paper weights on my desk. Now I have an old heavy Erikson cell phone that is fun to look at. This phone is huge by modern standards but was the sleek design back in 97.
3. Using the cell phone as a Door Stop
Yes this is my back door and that is a cell phone holding my door it open. On hot days we get a nice cross breeze coming down out of the Berkeley Hills and it runs right thru mu hose if I leave the door open for the dog to run in and out of. Not only did I not have to buy a door stop but I saved money not having to by a fan or air conditioner!
4. No Matchbook
Does your table have a short leg and wobbles? Place a cell phone under the short table leg for balance. It may be hard to find a book of matches to keep our bistro set from rocking so I use my old Razor. It is pretty thin and perfect to keep the table from rocking.
5. A Fetching Idea
Have your dog play fetch with it, given that your dog does not tear things up and a good fetcher. If he does like to destroy toys you will want to skip this suggestion. This time you actually want the dog to play with your cell. In the past you have raced Fido to save your cell but this time you are throwing it away using the old cell it to bond with your pooch. Just hope he does not mistake his cell toy for your new cell phone.
6. Call Grandma
After your toddler is thru the teething, everything in mouth, chewing phase, your toddler can use it as a toy. My son loves to press the buttons and pretend to talk. He has no concept of my Favs, and will just dial anyone so with this phone he can practice to use a cell and i do not have to worry about a huge bill.
7. Recharge Me
Battery charger for your new phone. My husband left his new phone charger at work one weekend and he needed to charge the new phone. Instead of buying a new phone charger to go with his new phone he saved a few bucks. You see his new phone used the same battery as his old phone so he plugged in his old phone recharged the battery. Once recharged he took the recharged battery out of the old phone and placed it in his new phone. RAecharged and ready to go!
8. A Pretty Fishy Idea
We went out fishing for salmon and I brought my old cell phone. I planned ahead to play a joke. I was know as the gal with the cell phone by this particular group of fishermen having fished with them in the past I got a lot of lip for bring along my cell. My idea was to tie my cell it to my fishing line for some weight instead of the standard lead weight. Sure it was a joke, the fisher men all thought I was tying my active cell and started laughing so hard. They all loved the idea. What a crazy gal using her phone to catch fish!?!?!
9. Wireless Flight
How far can you sling a cell? There is only one way to find out. Buy a sling or sling shot and go to the park early before folks get there, you do not want to hit anyone. Cells can really fly and with a brightly colored cell skin you will be able to see it in the grass upon retrieval.
10. Playing Phone Tag
Come up with a new game. Forget the bean bag toss, try a cell phone toss. You have all different shapes and size cells, cut out all different sized holes on a board and toss the phones at the board. Kids love to throw things. I assure you that they would love to get their hands on a bunch of cells and not get in trouble for tossing them at holes on a board.
Contracts run out, better deals pop up and new technology calls us to claim it. We go thru cell phones so quickly these days, it is nice to know that our old cells can have a second life. What neat ideas have you come up with for your old cell phones? Take a moment and write in the comments about your old cell phones second life.

This is very original, especially the idea of using a cell phone as a doorstop! I just donate my old ones to Verizon because they give these to battered women and children who can use the phone as a life line, which I think is a good cause. Thanks for the interesting hub.
