What to look for when choosing your GPS
71Are You Directionally Challenged?
Personally I am one of those “directionally challenged” individuals. I just can’t get there from here.
I rely heavily on my relationship with “Chickee Poo” - my personal handheld Global Positioning System - better known as a GPS. She has become a close, personal and knowledgeable friend who travels with me everywhere.
Alas, as technology changes, so do the needs of the user. And Chickee Poo I’m afraid is one of those personal choices made in a weak moment without proper knowledge of requirements and the technology itself.
Therefore, I feel the time has come to replace my dear old friend.
Three years in the world of technology is an entire lifetime.
So, as sad as that day will be, Chickee Poo (a first generation Nextar) needs to retire.

Choices, so many choices
There are so many choices. For those of us who rely on any form of technology the sheer volume in the number of choices is often daunting.
Thankfully there are always those who have written reviews, and felt the need to share both good and bad experiences with others.
The internet itself provides an overwhelming number of places to check out, companies advertising the “best of the best”.
Given all the hype that some products have generated, word of mouth is still the best way to go. So in your choosing, make sure you seek out those who have used the product you think you have decided to go with. Get their personal and expert opinions before you make that final decision to part with your hard earned cash.
Here are a couple of great sources of information on the internet to help you when choosing your next GPS:

What I will look for in my next GPS
The first thing I will require in my next GPS will be the ability to upgrade maps online.
Even though I live in Canada where there are only two seasons - winter and construction - I never considered there would be a need for updated maps. DUH! I was understandably disturbed when I realized that Chickee Poo was not upgradable, poor dear.
The next on my list of “must haves” is the ability to detour when the planned route is blocked because of heavy traffic or an accident. If you have ever traveled the busiest highway in Canada (The Kings Highway 401), anywhere in or around the Greater Toronto Area, you will no doubt understand the need for this feature.
There are many more things I will keep in mind, but those are my top two reasons for replacing my current device and saying goodbye to "Chickee Poo".
Here are some of the reasons why you're safer with GPS:
- You know where you're going
- The GPS will recalculate your route automatically if you take a wrong turn
- You don't need to deal with maps or a nagging navigator
- GPS improves night driving safety wtih better road awareness at night and in low-visibility conditions
- You know which lane to be in in advance
- Special "help" buttons that show you the nearest police, hospital, garage, and more

You can buy this unit at Canadian Tire. Bluetooth technology functionality can facilitate wireless communications between two electronic devices and can convert your GPS into a hands free car kit. It allows an incoming call to display on your GPS where you can answer it from a microphone inside your GPS.
- Be sure to check that the bluetooth technology in this device is compatible with your phone before you make the purchase.
- Be sure to check the sound quality
- Can this GPS display your phone directory and allow you to voice activate the call?
- Will your GPS incorporate your phone's directory with it's Points Of Interest (POI's)?
Safety Tips for you and your “Chickee Poo”
Is yours a hand held device? Do you have it mounted on your dashboard or windshield? Is your Navigational Device part of the “extras” on your new vehicle?
It doesn’t matter what GPS you use, or why you use them. Whether yours is an older model or a newer one, whether you use it daily or only once in awhile, please keep these safety tips in mind
- Never plug in your destination while driving
- Never reach for it if it while driving - even if it falls on the floor
- Never put in your home address and call it “home”
- Never leave your GPS on the dashboard. As Dohn says, someone might want it more than you do.
If you are using your GPS to search for Geocaches, you should never overlook the safety tips because you feel you will not get lost.
- Always carry extra provisions
- Wear the appropriate gear for your location
- Make sure someone knows what you are doing and when to expect you back.

Hey Zsuzsy, I'm well thank you.
Lucky son! He should be well pleased with his gift I should think. Good luck and good researching.
Duchess, these days most of them update themselves automatically - and you are right, you need that variety.
I think it's best to have one in the car, on or around your dashboard, and another incorporated in your cellphone. And, if you play golf at different courses, then a pocket or belt hook-able one can be a great asset! :)
My little car has only the bare necessities, but one day maybe this article will come in handy for me. I can certainly see out it would.
Hi Jaspal, I agree - they should be either built in or on your dashboard. Especially with the crack down on hand held devices in the car.
I'm not a golfer, so did not think about the uses for golfing, great idea, thanks for adding that (Mind if I edit my article and incorporate your idea?)
R Burow, I hope it helps when the time comes for you to choose one for yourself. Myself, I wouldn't be without it!
Hi Dutchess - I wish that I had read your fine article about two months ago when I was assigned to do an article on GPS devices for use on motorcycles. The one selected for the article was easily transferred from the cycle to a motorcar. Gus
I received my first GPS from my brother-in-laws parents who weren't comfortable using it. It's one of the best devices I've ever used and really do like it, especially when I was a subcontractor for AT&T where I was required to do a lot of traveling in a 25 mile radius. Thanks for the great advice, Duchess!
By the way, one of the things that I would add is that you NOT leave your GPS out in your car where it is visible when you leave your car, as some people just might like your GPS more than you! (Believe me, I know). If it fits, place it inside your car's glove compartment or middle console (or trunk if it doesn't fit).
Good advice Dohn gave above.
More to the point very useful Hub. It would be nice if they had them in mens voices though e.g The voice of my favourite actor, giving me directions while driving. :)
We're very technologically in the dark ages here. The 1984 GMC Pickup doesn't have gps to update.
Hi Gus, I'm sorry I was late in writing this hub (*smile). Hope you had success anyway. I have to say, I never thought about a motorbike. Can you tell I don't own one?
Hi Dohn, I have taken your advice and added your safety tip to my list. Thanks. It was a good one. As far as ranking all my gadgets, this one ranks right up there at the top!
Lady_E hello. I'm happy you found the information useful. It's always helpful to read the other hubs (but I always look them up AFTER I have written my own point of view). They often hit some areas I have missed.
As to the voice, Maybe you can find the one that works for you, me - I'm partial to Chickee Poo.
Godslittlechild, you've done extremely well to still have a 1984 GMC Pick up still in working order! Thankfully the handheld GPSs out there today can be purchased to use in older vehicles.
Good hub, Duchess. Very useful information. (My tech friend, I almost could have predicted you'd want a new one.)
hmmm, predictable am I?
Do please add that, Duchess ... there are such a wide variety of golf GPS systems out there. Some Country Clubs have a GPS already fitted on each of their carts. But many players like to carry their own ... it not only gives the distance to the pin, to the beginning and each edge of the green, and to any hazard that may be in the vicinity, but one can also keep track of the score. I believe the latest ones even allow one to make notes while they keep track of each shot one makes for analyzing later!
Jaspal, I have had this hub on "edit" this morning trying to decide where to put this information. I can't find a spot to fit.
May I make a suggestion? I know you don't consider yourself a writer, but you do love the game of golf. Why not write a hub about this and other aspects for the beginner golfer and talk about the things you have earned along the way that could aid them.
Funny, DH loves the game but has never mentioned these before.
Thanks for the Hub!!!It was great! Loved the line about the weather Have three here but winter and construction are the longest, we have tornadoe as well.
But wouldn't it be winter and destruction?? LOL
Happy Hubbing
Franki
Franki, thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment on the weather!
