What would be great... if the internet could only provide it?

The Question

What would be great if the internet could provide it?

When I saw that question I was thinking "that should be easy enough to answer. Just come up with something the internet doesn't already provide".

Thought Process

However, the more I thought, the more I realized the internet can provide us with already so much. Even if we don't take advantage of it all, it doesn't change that fact that you can

  • Find out contact info for almost any service. There's an online yellow pages after all.

  • Use the internet to shop for just about anything, or to ask for services.

  • Use the internet to call or email businesses. (Example: you can find out a local hairdresser on yellowpages.com, then use skype to call them and set up a home appointment).

  • Work. Whether it's via advertising, freelancing, or actual home-based work. There is the ability to do so.

  • Go to school. There are plenty of online colleges and even online high, middle, and elementary schools (mostly for homeschooled children...but they do exist!).

  • Put out just about any kind of media.

  • Keep in touch with friends. There are enough social sites, and you can do people searches, find out contact info if you don't have it. You can also send real letters via the internet. There are websites that do that for you. You can purchase stamps, and ask for a mailman to pick up a package at your house.

  • Be entertained. With more TV shows, movies, clips, music, books, comic books, comic strips, full games, and mini games being legally put on the internet, you really don't have any excuse not to be somewhat entertained.

  • Be advised for just about anything, from homework to a hobby to fixing things around the house.

  • Sports: Ok, you can't actually do the sports since they require physical activity, but you can watch games, read about how to get better, read about rules, have simulation games. There's nothing to stop you from finding an exercise guide and practice it in front of your computer, right?

  • Religion. There are online churches, online masses and other servings, and even biased and unbiased information about just any religion out there.

  • Travel. From being able to buy tickets, to watching virtual museums, or virtual cities, or virtual stadiums, etc... to videos about other countries, and pictures. You can't really have an excuse to either buy real traveling tickets, or do some virtual traveling.

  • Health: once again, there are loads of informational tidbits, exercise guides, health recipes, etc... to help keep you healthy - you can even order medicine. There are even quizzes to help you figure out a possible disease you may have if you feel sick.

So then I realized...There isn't really anything the internet can't - in some way - provide.

The one and only

However I did , eventually, think of one thing that the internet can't provide:

State Voting.

Let's face it. Sometimes our elected officials don't always do what's best for us. Wouldn't it be kind of cool if every resident of a state could have a real say in some of the propositions? Unfortunately we can't have that via internet right now because

  1. States never ask for the resident's votes on each law

  2. There isn't enough safety with hacking/voting fraud

But the question is "IF the internet could provide it", which it could! Just think about how great it'd be if everyone in a state, or even just a county, who came of age and could prove residency (which'd have to be renewed as per residency laws) could get a username and password sent to them. That login info could be used to get into a secure server and have EVERYONE vote on certain matters.

Of course this'll never happen.

Sounds good. I like what you said here in this hub. Very proficient. I do have one thing that I wish the internet could provide though. FREE ICE CREAM FOR ALL!!!!!

If I am elected as president next election, I will make sure that free ice cream for all becomes a reality.

I've never been much a fan of mint. But I do love chip :)

I'm sure sirdent will have every flavor available. It just means we'll have to vote for him and hope it's not another candidate's empty promise. You know how politicians canget.

I don't believe that the powers that be want to make voting that simple. They don't want a popular vote. Maybe the possibiltiy of voter tampering would be too high. Great article! I love your thoughts.

Bob, I'm sure SirDent will make sure that there's diabetic ice cream for you!

Great article, Squimp! I can't imagine coming up with anything short of ice cream that can't already be found online. You've given me something to think about!
