The Question - What Causes Brain Cancer
This is the first in a series of articles I will be publishing here in the coming days about the different types of cancers and their causes.
The brain is the main control system of the body responsible for monitoring and instructing every function in our body. Brain cancer is the worst disease that can affect the body. Although what causes brain cancer is not exactly known, extensive research has proven that this disease is not contagious and neither is it caused by head injury. Some unique causes of brain cancer may be attributed to instances where the disease spreads from the other body parts onto the brain and they include breast cancer, liver cancer and lung cancer.
Age and Environment
Brain cancer can occur at any given age but studies have indicated that the most affected age group is from the age of 3-12 and 40-70 years. Causes of brain cancer are also related to an exposure to certain harmful environments. Workers in particular industries are more vulnerable to brain cancer when compared to those in different industries. Some of the industries with high risk factors include, drug manufacturing, rubber manufacturing as well as oil refining. The causes of brain cancer may also be associated to heredity because it usually within members of a family.
What Leads to a Brain Tumor
The brain has numerous kinds of different cells, with each particular one playing a different role. Causes of brain cancer may also be due to the uncontrollable growth of these cells in the brain leading to a tumor. There are possibilities of the brain tumor being malignant or not. If a tumor is benign, it stays where it started, although it might grow to such a large size that it puts pressure on certain crucial areas. When a brain tumor is malignant, it is capable of spreading and causing brain cancer. Brain cancer is a dangerous disease as well as life-threatening since the cancerous cells are capable of interrupting some essential brain functions. The occurrence of brain cancer results in the continued rapid growth of the cells. The tissue and the cells around the cancerous cells may become invaded and crowded out.
Genetics
The causes of cancer can thus be associated with the mutation of genes found in the cells because cancer is a genetic disease. The susceptibility of the cancer genes are divided into two: Oncogenes which are responsible for activating the cell division and influencing the embryonic development. The tumor suppressor genes are responsible for halting the cell division. Typically, these genes are found in human cells that are normal, although some mutations can transform normal cells.
