What is gland expressing?

Scent glands are located around the rectum of a dog. These glands fill with a manure smelling liquid and put off an odor.

Larger bodied, healthy, dogs are usually able to express these glands while having a bowl movement. Smaller bodied (most house pets), obese, or long bodied dogs have trouble expressing their own glands. Dachshunds have exceptional trouble expressing the glands due to their long bodies.

Large or small dog, whatever the size, should have their glands checked regularly since the glands may fill and burst. Should a gland burst it could cause a great deal of trouble and pain for your pet. Infection may set up inside the dog's body, as well.

Scent gland expression is considered a veterinary procedure. Many groomers are willing to express the glands during your dog's bath or full service groom.
