When people hear about the "resolution" of a video signal, they usually expect the discussion to have something to do with computer monitors, or settings for a computer operating system. Television, even the analog broadcast version, has resolution too.
High-Definition TeleVision (HDTV) is a format which provides a higher resolution than a standard analog television signal provided by formats such as NTSC, PAL and SECAM. HDTV also uses a 16:9 aspect ratio, which makes it possible to broadcast film, for example, without letterboxing or pillarboxing, as would be necessary on older televisions, which support only a 4:3 aspect ratio.
HDTV has a number of other advantages, including digital broadcasts which use far less overall bandwidth, higher color bandwidth, which provides some of the characteristic sharpness of an HDTV signal, and support for the Dolby Digital AC-3 format, which includes native support for 5:1 surround sound.
To get the maximum benefit from a high definition television, it is necessary to tune to a high-definition broadcast.

I really think that the picture for HDTV is simply amazing when I am watching my favorite sports teams play. I cannot get over how real it is. My parents have HDTV so I watch it whenever I am over at their house.
