Every device on the Internet must be uniquely identified so that other devices, whether they are servers, mobile phones or routers, know where to send requests for data or where to send data that has already been requested.
An IP address is a number written as a group of four values, each consisting of a number between zero and 255. IP stands for "Internet Protocol" and is often recognized as part of the network technology known as "TCP/IP" which stands for "Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol," and which is designed around the use of these unique addresses.
Together the four numbers in an IP address form what is known to programmers as a 32-bit value, or a combination of four eight-bit values. The four values are each seperated by a dot, making IP addresses read as "0.0.0.0" through "255.255.255.255"
Devices that are connected to the Internet are always accessible through their IP address, and they must be assigned an address when they are attached to the network so they can operate with the other systems.
