Every server on the Internet is uniquely identified by its IP address, but numbers can become very confusing, especially 12 digits at a time, so a service was made available to the Internet called the Domain Name Service or DNS.
Domain Name Service is very simple. It is a system which assigns a name, known more accurately as a "domain name" to an IP address. The circuitry of the Internet is more than capable of operating correctly without names, and in fact, does still operate with only ones and zeroes, but DNS makes it easier for people, who don't think in ones and zeroes, to communicate between computer systems.
There are many name servers on the Internet. These are Internet servers with a very important function, and that is to translate names into IP addresses, and vice versa. A name server is consulted by every web client, for example, when this page is accessed in order to find out which computer is Hubpages.com
