The Story

So by now you have heard the story.. An underdog girls basketball team loses to another Girls Basketball team 100 to 0.  What is so bad about that you ask?  Well the underdog team from Dallas Academy, only had eight players out of twenty girls that wanted to play basketball.  This team has been winless over the last four years.  The other team the Covenant school was up by 59 points at halftime.  Some reports claimed that the Covenant School did  full court press the whole second half.  Reports also states spectators and the assistant coach was cheering wildly as the girls approached their hundredth point.

What are we teaching?

Often children learn by example.. so what are we teaching them by acting this way? As I approach my soccer-mom years I have to contemplate this. Who doesn't want to see their child succeed.. but at what cost? I would rather see my child do the right thing instead of go for the win. Winning isn't everything is it?

The girls on the losing team are obviously there to play and must enjoy playing because winning hasn't been a part of their team for four years.. Maybe they are teaching us a lesson about what sports are all about...

Who is to blame?

Looking back at this event who is to blame if anyone at all? The coach of the Covenant team was fired, but was that entirely necessary? At first the Covenant school tried to forfiet.. but is was way too late for that.. Is it going to send a message that good sportsmanship is what is all about? Time will tell. It would seem that some rational adult there would have hey enough is enough. I beleive if my daughter was playing on the winning team I would have walked out of the game third or fourth quarter.. making my protest know that I came to watch a game not a slaughter...

Quote

This is a quote from the Covenant Website.. I found it  interesting

"Winsome. While ordered, Covenant's culture is not rigid. Faculty and staff promote an environment of grace and joy."

What was graceful about winning 100 to nothing?

Professionals need time outs too

As time progresses I find more and more that we as a society are to blame for Unsportsman like conduct.  The so called professionals seem to get away with it all of the time.  Serena Williams is the latest example.  In September of 2009 she becomes upset about a call the line judge made.  She in turn threw a tennis ball at her and used several expletives.  She was justly fined 10,000 dollars for her outburst and has since issues several apologies.   What an example she was setting for teen athletes everywhere! We may not be finding her face on a box of Wheaties for a while!

Should the coach from the Covenant School be fired?

Idiot coaches. Sportsman ship in America is long forgotten. the only time I kid of see it is in the NFL, most teams when comfortably up, just run the ball and in the end they all shake hands. they don't even shake hands or high five in baseball anymore.
