Whats Comin' Up
61Coming up in Tinsel Town:
The summer session is starting to wind down for me, checked off all but 3 movies on my 10+ list, a couple I skipped and then the soon to be released The Dark Knight, which if you can, see in IMAX. It will only enhance what is set to be an amazing movie in probably every way possible. Christopher Nolan has yet to be boring or even predictable. There are a few movies left and I'll just condense them all for you going up to what I know or care about in November and possibly December.
August:
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor-- Well, I might go see this, looks as stupid as the other mummy movies, so it'll probably be much more enjoyable on TV or renting when that comes out. Some people like this, and I don't know why, but thats all up to you!
Swing Vote-- Kevin Costner plays dumb/crazy Kevin Costner, the one that is actually entertaining and makes good movies. This all star cast looks to play out a theory that every vote counts and if one person's vote is not properly counted, the whole system is frozen till the correction can be made. That or until the Supreme Court decides who they want to be President. Last bit probably not in the movie, but this looks like it could be interesting and entertaining.
Pineapple Express-- Written by Seth Rogen and his writing partner in crime Evan Goldberg, the guys who ACTUALLY wrote Superbad, and of course produced by comedy Czar Judd Apatow, Pineapple Express could be as hilarious and original as Superbad, or misguided and repetitive as Semi-Pro in my opinion. Just have to see for myself when it comes out, but I'm hoping for something good, haven't been any comedies, romantic, gritty or otherwise worth even renting lately. So go and enjoy James Franco and Seth Rogen on they drug fueled adventure avoiding capture by Gary Cole!
Bottle Shock-- While the trailer for this movie does give away a lot, and the conclusion is rather obvious or there would be no point in making the movie, the path on which it takes you look like it could be worth your money. Some good acting, interesting characters, and a bit of feel good American publicity never was a complete waste of time. Bored and don't want to watch Seth Rogen and James Franco get high? Find an independent theater and check this out.
Tropic Thunder-- Hilarious. This movie should be a return the greatness for Ben Stiller after Along Came Polly and Heartbreak Kid destroyed the great memories of There's Something About Mary and Zoolander. Still plays a self absorbed action star, Robert Downey Jr. is some over acting Oscar winning maniac and Jack Black returns to be, well Jack Black and we all love him as a supporting character. Go and check out the redband version of the trailer, provides you with a little more info on the movie, not as light hearted as it may seem.
Hamlet 2-- I don't know what to make of this movie. The trailer has some funny stuff in it, but I'm going to have to hold off for this on DVD because it looks a little to off the wall kind of humor for a movie theater, with the pressure of ENTERTAIN ME NOW FOR MY MONEY can crush a movie like this. Steve Coogan is a funny guy though. Hopefully he can hold this movie up, cause other than a weird cameo by Elisabeth Shue, I don't recognize anyone.
Traitor-- Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Jeff Daniels. I'll be seeing this one for sure. A rogue military operative that abandoned his duties and his country, or did he? Again or did he not? You can kinda tell how this might turn out, but with some pretty big name actors I have hope for the story line to be convoluted enough to keep it interesting and allow the ending to shock you even if you might have seen it coming.
September:
Bangkok Dangerous-- Well Nicholas Cage looks set to disappoint me again. I've never been a fan of his, I do like Adaptation though and The Rock is probably my favorite action movie, but I think that has more to do with Michael Bay than him. Unless this movie comes out and makes billions and somehow rakes in good reviews, I'll be seeing this sometime in March on DVD. He's an assassin that suddenly isn't happy that the guy who hired him apparently lied to him about the guy he's killing, and no doubt will end up killing that guy and a few hundred other people in the way. Oh and it looks like a bit of a remake from a foreign film with a few little Hollywood edits.
Righteous Kill-- Both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro have taken what I would consider massive career slides in the last 5 or so years. This looks like it could be a turn around for both of them, and apparently they hadn't worked together, even though it seems like they've been in every cop action movie of the 90's together. Guess I have a bad memory. I have high hopes for this movie to be a good crime drama that does cause you to ask a few questions about when it might actually be ok to use a little extra force, and how it should be handled. Go check this one out, I really think we'll all be pleased with the quality of this film.
Burn After Reading-- The Coen brothers made a detour from their typical movies to do No Country for Old Men, by far my favorite movie last year. They are back to form along the lines of Fargo, The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where art thou? I decided not to count the number of Oscars and Oscar nominations the cast of this movie have because it would take a while, and I'm sure if you included the Coen's it would be in the high teens. So when the Brad Pitt I enjoy from movies like The Twelve Monkeys returns as a dumb gym owner and John Malkovich is a very angry man and J.K. Simmons as some CIA boss man, this movie will be hilarious and probably a little disturbing. Oh ya, Tilda Swinton and George Clooney are in this as well as Francis McDormand. A few more Oscars for ya.
Choke-- Chuck Palahniuk, the maniac who wrote Fight Club wrote this book which now has become a movie. From the trailer, and having not read the book, I don't think its fair to compare it to Fight Club. It seems much different, still a depressing man is the main character, but he seems to maintain his sanity in this one, that is debatable though. I'll be seeing this for sure just to find out exactly what is going on. First time director, usually an actor Clark Gregg is at the helm, we'll see what he's made of picking something as obviously complex as this.
Eagle Eye-- Someone has decided to screw with Shia LaBeouf, and his only option is to run from the Feds till he figures out just why he has been marked as a terrorist by what I guess would be a terrorist organization and then turned over to the police. I have no idea what is going on in the trailer, other than he has no money, then a lot, then the FBI after him, should be interesting. Keep an eye out for this, reviews will most likely help guide the choice to see this one.
Towelhead-- This movie seems to have two names, Towelhead and Nothing is Private. Creation of writer/director Alan Ball. Who is Alan Ball and why does this movie seem so straight to the point and the opposite of political correctness? Alan Ball wrote Six Feet Under. Alan Ball wrote American Beauty. This movie was made to push your buttons and to reveal some of the characters in America that people don't like to admit are actually real and some of the tings you think, that you pretend you don't. This will not be a date movie, and you will either come out laughing at yourself and just how stupid people can be when you see them from outside the situation, or so depressed you'll go home and do whatever you can to get this movie banned. Enjoy yourselves!
October:
Religulous-- A documentary I just found out about yesterday when I went to see Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Its Bill Maher people. Don't know who he is? Don't see this movie. Don't like him, don't see this movie. Closed minded or don't like to be questioned on your beliefs and opinions? Don't see this movie. Enjoy what looks to be a balanced discussion from both sides, with a few nuts on each and Bill Maher playing Mr. Skeptical? Then go ahead and check it out, I'll be there, laughing and shaking my head along with you.
City of Ember-- Bill Murray, Tim Robins, Martin Landau, and a city underground with children who are trying to find a way out. I have no idea what this movie is, the trailer makes these good actors seem someone comical and strange. If you know something about this or from what I have heard the book, let me know, cause I'm clueless.
Saw V-- It is Halloween, so obviously there is a Saw movie in theaters. My favorite are the first and second ones, but no doubt I'll check this out. See if I can solve the problem before they do and just who is going to have something horrible done to their head.
Pride and Glory-- They shot this movie in early 2006 and it has had so many release dates, I bet it comes out on DVD tomorrow and no one knows and then a theater release in 2010. It looks good, it has Edward Norton and Colin Farrell and a few other good actors including Jon Voight. If it does finally come out in October, I'd say go see it, I've heard only good things, but it is worrisome that its been around for so long and no one has seen a lot of it.
RocknRolla-- A new crime film by Guy Ritchie. What is there to say, he did Snatch, amazing, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, really really good, and Revolver which was cool, but I couldn't really get my head around the last 5 minutes of the movie, just a little to obscure for me I guess, and I like to pride myself on getting what a director is doing or saying, so ya, good luck! This should be good though, hopefully he'll have a return to form, his last few have been epic flops in quality and money.
November:
Quantum of Solace-- Yay for the next 007 move with Daniel Craig! This will hopefully be as cool and awesome as Casino Royale was, even with a new director, but Marc Forster is a good one. The first sneak peak trailer was released with Hancock earlier this week and it looks to continue the angry James Bond mode, and with all the accidents we keep hearing about on the set, they better have done some pretty cool shit to make those injuries worth while! I'll be first in line for his one.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince-- I'm just reminding everyone to see this, haha, I think its obvious we all will. Hopefully the don't cut to much out, but it looks to be a long movie and with them dividing the last one up into two parts, they can't remove to many details or people will get lost. That and the movies will just suck. I've got my money on a trailer to be released with The Dark Knight in 2 weeks, so there is another reason to see that movie haha.
The Soloist-- Jamie Fox in another musically inclined movie, and Robert Downey Jr. co-starring. I'd say this movie is going to be one of two things. An Oscar nomination fest, or a flop. I don't know enough and haven't seen any pictures of this so I'll just leave the speculation there for now, but keep an eye out for this one. Joe Wright is coming straight from his Oscar nominated Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, so there is a good chance he continues the trend.
Transporter 3-- Score, Jason Statham is one of the few actors that knows what he is really good at, knows he isn't going to win an Oscar and from there does movies that are awesome action movies and he wins no matter what. He's a better version of Arnold in the 80's. Depending on if I'm broke or not, I'll see this in theaters, but DVD still seems most likely.
December:
The Day the Earth Stood Still-- I've got a good quote from a friend "finally, a role in which Keanu Reeves doesn't have to try and show emotion." That seems to be true, and this movie will be as bad as War of the Worlds. Just because it was scary to 1950's people on the radio and primitive television, doesn't mean its going to have any effect on people today. Someone needs to come up with something that is a little more modern, instead of just remaking someone else's out of date idea.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button-- The trailer for this movie is just freaky. A man that ages backwards, all of them still looking like Brad Pitt, and Cate Blanchett aging forwards, wow the make up department could snag an Oscar for this one! This looks like it could be a very character driven movie, and allowing someone to do what everyone wants to do, live their youth with all the knowledge they have now. David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en, and Zodiac) looks to be out to freak us out in yet another way.
The Spirit-- We'll stop here cause I've run out of energy and brain power, and this will entertain you 9 who read this till December. Frank Miller (300, Spin City). Scarlett Johannson, Eva Mendes, Sam Jackson. This will be interesting, and most likely really really really heavy on the green screen.
