Of course, of course, safe and responsible driving should be an imperative every time you get behind the wheel. But sometimes it happens that one exceeds the posted speed limit even when driving safely and responsibly. For those times, a radar detector is an incredibly useful tool for avoiding tickets (and the bump in insurance rates they produce). For several a complete list of tips on steering clear of speed traps see the hub How To Avoid Getting A Speeding Ticket.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RADAR DETECTOR

Most important qualities to look for when choosing a radar detector:

 • Works for all three bands used by police radar guns: X, K and Ka. The X band is used by many other electronic devices -- it is common to get false warnings on the X band when driving through urban areas. The K and Ka bands are almost exclusively used by radar guns.
 • Detects laser speed-reading guns and so-called “pop” radar guns that are able to instantly turn on and get a speed reading on your car.
 • High sensitivity to police radar guns while also screening out false alarms.

Secondary qualities to look for:

 • 360 degree detection, as opposed to only scanning for radar straight ahead
 • Radar jamming capabilities, which disrupts a radar gun’s ability to get an accurate fix on your car.

Radar detector marketing tends place undo emphasis on a miscellaneous array of product features, ranging from the meaningless (like the color of the display) to the mildly helpful (like separate city and highway settings). Do not let those sway your decision. The five qualities listed above are -- by far! -- the most important when shopping for a radar detector. Besides the price, of course. Sadly, radar detectors are a product where you tend to get what you pay for. In general, the more a radar detector costs the better it detects radar. Below is our take on the best model in four different price categories.

Note: In the United States radar detectors are legal for passenger automobiles everywhere except for Virginia and the District of Columbia. Radar jammers are illegal in Oklahoma, though radar detectors without jamming features are allowed.

BEST RADAR DETECTOR $351 to $600

Valentine One

The Valentine One gets our top nod for one simple reason: under real-world conditions no other radar detector can detect radar and laser with as much accuracy and advance warning. We also like the display arrows that point towards the direction the warning is coming from.

There are two other units that are very close to the Valentine One in detection range: the Bel STi Driver and the Passport 9500i. These have two advantages over the Valentine: they are smaller and have no antennas to install -- just suction cup them to your windshield and go. Of the two we prefer the Passport 9500i for the ease-of-use and low number of false alarms. What's really cool about the 9500i is that it has GPS built in; the unit knows how fast you are traveling and will adjust its sensitivity accordingly. You also have the option of having the 9500i alert you when you exceed a certain speed.

BEST RADAR DETECTOR $151 to $350

Escort Passport 8500 X50

When a casual driver asks me what radar detector to buy my answer is: the Escort 8500. No other units offers as much radar detecting capability per dollar. Certainly, there’s a quality gap between the Escort 8500 and the three superior radar detectors mentioned above. There’s a much larger gap from the Escort 8500 down to any unit that’s less expensive. Besides offering superb detection capabilities, the Escort 8500 is capable of receiving software updates, meaning it’s technology can stay current for much longer than other models. Highly recommended.

The Escort 8500 comes in two models: one with a blue display and one with a red. We prefer the blue (it is easier on the eyes at night). Most other people seem to prefer the blue too since that model is more expensive. Besides the price and color of the display the two models are identical.

BEST RADAR DETECTOR $51 to $150

BEL Vector 940

The BEL Vector 940 is capable of detecting the K band, the band most commonly used by radar guns, almost as well as the Escort 8500. That’s the prime reason why it is the best radar detector under $150. The 940 is also well built -- it doesn’t feel cheap at all. It has a pleasingly small size and all the usual features. The downside of the 940 is its subpar ability to detect the Ka band, the one used by the new radar guns, and its negligible laser detecting capability. Still, if you are uncertain whether to get a radar detector at all the BEL Vector 940 is a solid inexpensive model to try out without breaking the bank.

BEST RADAR DETECTOR UNDER $50

Whistler XTR-140

The very best radar detector in the under $50 price category won’t work as well as average quality detector that’s more expensive. We suggest choosing a model in a higher price range. However, if all you are able to commit towards a radar detector is $50 then that’s still a worthy investment to make. After all, even a cheap radar detector can give you more warning of an impending speed trap than having no radar detector at all. Among the ultra-budget opinions, the Whistler XTR-140 stands out for its ability to detect laser as well as radar. All the engineering of this model seems to have gone towards increasing its radar sensitivity rather than needless frills -- exactly what you want in a unit for this price.

That was a very complete review. I liked the way that you broke them down by price. I agree with you that you get what you pay for when it comes to radar detectors, as with just about everything. Thanks for that great review. You can check out my site or your customers can come by at History of the radar Detector
