What's Up With Abortion?

Tragedy Or Statistics

Joseph Stalin, General Secretary of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1953, shed the blood of those who opposed him with ruthless abandon. He said: “A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.”

America refuses to see a reflection of itself in a quote from a brutal communist dictator, but nevertheless our eyes are clearly staring back at us. Stalin was a butcher who destroyed millions of his own countrymen in pursuit of ideological goals. How can Uncle Sam possibly have any resemblance to him?

Choice, a woman’s right to choose, is the mantra of an ideology that disfigures our national countenance. What was once an infrequent medical procedure performed in an emergency situation to save a mother’s life has been transformed into something akin to a rite of passage.

Legal, Safe & Rare?

The longtime rallying cry is the phraseology that says abortion must remain legal and safe for those rare instances of rape, incest or health of the mother. If only that came close to true, but facts are stubborn: 1% of abortions are the result of rape or incest; 6% occur because of abnormalities in the baby’s development or for the safety of the mother. 93% of abortions performed in the United States are for social reasons such as convenience or as a form of birth control.

We have institutionalized abortion and placed it on center-stage in the public square. With the healthcare reform package currently under scrutiny, there is fresh and quite vociferous debate about abortion rights. Should Federal tax dollars be allocated or made available to fund abortions?

Despite advances in medical technology that can now distinguish a beating heart mere days after conception, the fundamentalist religion of relativism persists; it has systematically fashioned a liturgy steeped in political correctness in an attempt to disguise the barbarity of its values. The deconstruction of the common sense meanings of words has radically increased over the past several decades.

Consider The Numbers

If an unborn human being is not a human being, what is it? Our selfish and indulgent culture has devalued life to the point that now when someone speaks out against infanticide they are branded a right-wing nut-job or worse.

A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic. If linking Stalin to present-day American mores seems harsh or far-fetched consider the following numbers: Since Roe versus Wade and the advent of on-demand abortion it is estimated that 50 million children have been surgically eliminated. That is more than the total loss of life in every American conflict from the War of Independence through the present battlefronts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2009 alone, approximately 1.6 million babies will never draw a first breath. Those horrific statistics break down to 3700 deaths a day, which means one out of every four pregnancies will be terminated by abortion. And remember 93% will be for birth control or because the child is an inconvenience.

By and large we have grown immune to being shocked by what is an ongoing holocaust of epic proportions. It is figured that approximately 43% of women will have an abortion by the age of forty-five.

Weighed In The Balance

The One who formed the building blocks of the universe entered human history via the womb of a peasant woman from Nazareth.  In doing so, our Creator sanctified human life.

What’s up with abortion is this:  Abortion does not merely jettison a mass of tissue, as activist humanists proclaim.  It silences a beating heart; it snuffs out a priceless life dreamed of by God. Abortion is the pinnacle of arrogance because it is an outgrowth of our perpetual effort to presume the role of the Divine. We habitually elevate our sense of supremacy as we seek to master creation and expand our sphere of dominance.

God is the sole author of life.  Humans cannot create life, but in controlling its end with chemicals or stainless steel instruments, we cloak ourselves with a measure of self-styled deity.  There should be no on-demand feature for abortion; it ought to be reserved for extreme circumstances and even then the moral ramifications must be central to the decision making process.

Life is not an accident; it is a gift from God and we are to handle it with the greatest of care.  On Judgment Day, God will hold us responsible for whether or not we honored life.

According to Jesus of Nazareth, the yardstick to be used on that day will be the principle embodied in these words:  “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”  A helpless child in the womb certainly qualifies to be counted as one of the least of these.

By that standard, because a million deaths is a statistic, our society will be weighed in the balance and found wanting.

Ken,

My sister had an abortion many years ago before my family had come to the Lord. I was like the apostle Paul, in that I "consented to the baby's death" as he did the disciple Stephen's death before he converted to Jesus Christ. I gave my "yes" vote for her to have the child aborted.

My sister was profoundly affected by the abortion which sent her into a deep depression. My family regrets terribly what we gave our approval-to it and though we know God has forgiven us, we carry the scar.

We all know we have another loved one we will see someday when we go to be with the Lord, where they are waiting for us. I have a niece or a nephew I have yet to meet!

Thank you for this incredible eye-opening Hub!

I get such a picture of people all walking in the same direction with blindfolds on - following some unknown principle and not able to see what a moster it really is. Your hub is written for all and I too pray much traffic will happen here. My heart just screams for life! I did a hub that looked at the person in the womb some time ago here is the link if you are interested. http://hubpages.com/hub/Look-At-who-I-Am

God bless you, Ken

Absolutely one of the most important and relevant hubs to be needs to be not only read but heard. You expressed the deepest feelings of a heart that beats for the value of life. Abortion not only aborts a life, but a dream, a future, a hope, a gift. Thank you and may those who have experienced this in their lives and families and are hurting deeply experience God's grace and healing.

I struggle to see the other side of the argument in your story. it is all fine that you believe in the sanctity of life and all that, but what happened to a woman's free choice? also, all these extra babies - would they not become a statistic? where would they live? what would they eat? what if their lives would be horrific like the one of Baby Peter in the UK and many more who did not hit the headlines?

You are right, a child is a human being and not an inconveniece, but would it not be better if actually the parents take responsibility for the decision where to allow a pregnancy to carry on. The alternative would be offering nothing but misery to an offspring for the sake of theorists who live their lives with the heads in outdated Bronze Age texts rather than the real world now.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Ken. I enjoyed your hub very much and I am glad to hear that although you are firm in your beliefs you are able to extend the grace of God to those who have had or advocate abortion. Good job brother.

We've gone around this in other forums, Ken. The insight that "a million deaths is a statistic" is a key point. We may modify what we think about abortion in any particular person's story -- unique situations force us to think -- but the ease with which we slipped into so many deaths frightens me. I hear arguments for abortion on demand, and see the force of some of them; but the ease with which we end life, and encourage others to do the same, is frightening.

Daryl - Thanks for stopping in & sharing. You are correct that "unique situations force us to think". The ease at which we have made abortion on demand a right is frightening.

I was having this conversation with a couple of friends the other day, about abortion, whether it should be legal, moral issues, etc. One thing that was brought up by a friend, that I hadn't thought about is this:

What is the difference between abortion and the death penalty? At the end of the day, we are putting someone to death for a crime they committed (who has lived a life, however old they are), but what about the mothers who choose to abort their child? Should we put them to death because they chose to abort their baby? What is the difference?

I have been thinking about that and wonder if there could be any parallels drawn between the two. Perhaps I am over thinking this issue, but for whatever reason, this part of the arguement stuck with me.

TheSablirab - Thanks for sharing your comments. I appreciate them.

Here are a couple thoughts: A baby is entirely innocent. Someone facing the death penalty has committed a heinous crime. However, given the corruption of the legal system I am not convinced that capital punishment can be justified.

It is a mucked up world we live in, isn't it?

That is what my friends said, that the one who is facing the death penalty committed a heinous crime. It was just interesting, either way, to hear what people thought of abortion and what their personal view of it was.

And yes, this is a mucked up world we live in; I think about it every day!

Ken, I know I am a little behind here,...sorry:-(

Great post, however, I think when you mention inconvenience, you down play the poverty angle. Now I know one can state that if you can't support a baby don't "fool-around". But let us not place unrealistic christian expectations on those who do not follow the Lord Jesus. While I am in complete agreement with you on the evils of abortion, let's be honest the "church" doesn't seem to care about the baby or mother once they have stopped the abortion. Please know that I am speaking in generalities. I know some churches are very active in helping new moms in poverty. But for the most part it's talk with little action. We seem so afraid of being part of the social gospel that we refuse to follow the commands of Jesus in the great sermon on the mount. I'm just sayin' :-)

timc - Thanks for sharing your comments. You would not get much of an argument from me.

Maybe the problem with the church has to do with convenience also; for the most part it is the me-church mentality in affluent North America. By & large we have abdicated our social responsibilities. Sad but true.
