Whats a Monopoly?
69Whats that Smell?
So what is a Monopoly? Back in the old days it was when a business like Standard Oil cornered the Market in one good that was essential. It was when a company like AT&T held such incredible power that no one would challenge it. Evantully some people stepped up and shouted out about it.
Today, thanks to our current president and his belief in "Supply Side Economics" many companies have been allowed to merge. Some might point out that once again AT&T is becoming dominant due to it purchasing many of its former forced spinoff companies. Exxon and Mobile, two of the spinoffs from the old Standard oil are allowed to merge with almost no debate. It seems that services essential to our life, like fuel and communications worth billions of dollars are allowed to be taken over without a fuss.
Yet, when two struggling companies whose merger might help consumers comes up there is an outcry of monopoly. One might belive that this merged company might hold its power over the American people like a vengeful tyrant. Yet these merged companies would only affect 14 or 15 million people. Not only that, but the companies aren't something that you NEED or REQUIRE to live your life. I'm talking about Satellite Radio. There is no reason that these companies aren't allowed to Merge. Not only that, but the biggest opponets of the merger is the NAB. Thats the National Assocation of Broadcasters. I can't even think of the way to describe it. Just try to imagine something like Mac and Linux merging and Windows claiming that those two companies merged would be a monopoly. The NAB reaches just about everyone in America, whereas even the combined satellite radio companies would reach less then 20 million.Something is Rotten in the District of Columbia...
