There are many herbal aids to sleep that avoid doping with sleeping pills whilst assisting in restful sleep.

Valarian root available in pills,tincture and plain root is an effective herbal sedative and provides relief for insomnia and nervous disorders. It is natures valium and has a long usage tradition.

Lavender oil (dripped onto the pillow) has a soothing effect and has traditional uses for relaxation everywhere it grows naturally. Can also be used in a nice relaxing bath before sleep.

Supplementing with 5-htp (not if on antidepressents) magnesium,vitamin b12 and omega 3 fatty acids can also provide nutritional support for the nervous system and help against anxiety aiding in restful sleep.

Chamomile has anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and smooth-muscle relaxing action and there are a variety of "night time" tea's available with a combination of rosehip , chamomile and lemon balm that act as a natural relaxant to help gain more restful sleep.

Melatonin supplements can also help , as light levels decrease the level of melatonin in the brain increases and it is this that controls the sleep/wake cycle of our body clock. Taking extra melatonin before bed can assist with insomnia and provides a deeper sleep.It is also useful during long haul flights to reset ones body clock and reduce jet lag.
