Five steps!

What's your target heart rate? Let's find out in 5 steps.

The formula for happy hearts

(maximum HR − resting HR) × Intensity) + resting heart rate = Target Heart Rate

1. Maximum HR is = 220 - (your age) . *be honest!

2. Resting HR is the # of heart beats for a full minute while you are at rest.

3. Subtract those numbers.

4. Intensity: It is recommended we workout at 60-80% intensity so we don't burn ourselves out. So if I want to work out at 70%, I will multiply my number by .7

5. Now, this is number is a little too low. So add your resting HR to it.

VOILA!!! This is your THR , Target Heart Rate!!!

So, Let's do an example:

Neil McDiamond is 30 yrs old with a resting heart rate of 100bpm

220-30 = 190 bpm, or his maximum HR.

190bpm -100bpm = 90bpm, which is Max HR minus Resting HR.

Neil hasn't worked out in a while because he's been on tour, so he wants to work out at only 55% Intensity.

So, 90 X .55 = 49.5 bpm, BUT C'MON NEIL! You can do better than that!

So we add his resting HR of 100 to 49.5 and we have his Target rate of 149.50 Beats per minute.

WAY TO GO NEIL.

And a fun way to remember how to get your THR,

just say, " My Rear is Righteous!"

M.R.I.R.

Max heart rate - Resting heart rate x Intensity + Resting heart rate = THR!
