Most consumers think that just because they buy a new TV or device, they do not need to invest in HDMI cables to go with it.  However, any professional will tell you that without HDMI, you are not taking full advantage of what your TV in particular has to offer.  Without HDMI, you might as well continue to live in the stone age with your older television set and analog cable channels.

HDMI stands for high-definition multimedia interface. It is a type of audio/video cable that transmits uncompressed digital signals from a source to an output device, such as a TV, projector or computer monitor. HDMI allows for a larger amount of data to be transferred from the source to the output device. These HDMI cables can transmit HD signals, along with the standard definition and other lower end signals and replace less advanced cable components, such as composite, component or s-video cables.

The higher end HDMI cables, while costly, will transmit the largest amount of uninterrupted data from your cable box or cable source to your TV. This means that you are getting the highest possible signal from both devices and taking full advantage of both your source and your output units. When purchasing a new TV, you can see in stores the difference the right HDMI cables make to the output signal.

With the evolution of cable signal going digital and now high-definition, without HDMI cables you will not be able to take advantage of the highest possible signal available.  If you are going to spend the money on a new HDTV, why would you not want to invest in the proper cables to get the most out of it?  That is the point of HDMI.  Without it, you might as well stick with your old TV and wait until analog and standard digital signals go out of practice.

I agree that HDMI is need to get the high definition out of your digital TV but I have heard that because it is digital and not analog the cable selection is not as important. Sure a badly put together cable is going to pose problems but you don't have to go to the high high prices to get decent cables.

Well, the higher end and more expensive cables can transfer more data than the less expensive ones. The more data that is transferred at once is what gives you the best possible quality. That is where the issue lies when it comes to consumers not quite sure if they should invest in a more expensive cable when they can get one that is less. Once consumers understand why they need more data transfer, then they understand why to make the leap. However, most sales associates do not actually explain this during a sale.
