Whats the difference between religion and spirituality to you?
56The difference between the two.
This hub is merely based on my opinion and nothing is etched in stone. The reason I say this is that people say that there are two things in life that we do not speak about and that is politics an religion. There are so many ideas on these two subjects that can lead to debates. Religion in my eyes is something you are born into. For example I am Jewish and I am proud. This does not mean I am religious. I practice the customs to the best of my ability but do not abide by everything being Jewish has to offer. For example I do not go to temple but when the high holy days are in effect like Yom Kippur or Rosh Hashannah I follow the festivities. For example many different activities are forbiddon on Yom Kippur do to what the holiday means. It is a day to atone for ones sins. This means that the people that are really religious go to temple and do not eat or watch televison or turn on electricity. I have my own beliefs and I just do not eat for the day.As far as spirituality is concerned I wear a Jewish star that my dad purchased for me when I was 5 years old. I am now 41. This peice of jewelery mean the world to me and I would be lost if I did not wear it. In my life I have lost this necklace twice and it has turned up many months later in places one can only imagine finding it. There is a funny story about this that I can create a whole other hub about. Perhaps I will do that in the future.
I am also in the dating world and it would mean the world to me to meet fall in love with someone who is Jewish. People around me ask me why it matters if I am not that religious. My response is that it just does because that is the group that I feel that I belong to. This does not mean that I do not associate with others it is just my preference.

As a Catholic Christian I've thought a lot about this question. For me, as I understand things now, in my 50s: Religion would be, say, a demand that people strictly follow the ritual rules of the Pentateuch, whereas spirituality would be Hillel's or Christ's reduction of the Torah to two rules - love God and love your neighbor. As the great Hillel said: "The rest is but commentary." and as Christ said, "Do this, and you shall find Life." Amen and Amen.
