What's Keeping You Up?

The reason we occasionally experience poor sleep vary from person to person. The most common causes include a racing mind at bedtime, anxiety, certain prescriptions, alcohol, travel, and decreasing levels of melatonin, which is a hormone that regulates your sleep patterns. But one of the biggest culprits disturbing sleep is stress.

It's a vicious cycle. Stress (whether good like the excitement that comes from a vacation; or bad, like worry about a loved one) causes nervous energy that can wreak havoc on your sleep patterns. Then when you don't get enough good sleep, the levels of your stress hormones increase even more. You're slapped awake by a double whammy.

The next time your mind is racing try a little self hypnosis. Look at the picture of the red rocks and water. It is a very beautiful and peaceful place called red rock crossing in Sedona, AZ. Now close your eyes and imagine you are there now. Imagine you are floating on the water. If you don't want to get wet, imagine you are floating on an air filled plastic raft. Just feel the gentle motion of the water while you feel the warmth of the sun. Imagine the sun is now coming through the top of your head, warming all the muscles of your scalp and face. Feel the muscles relax as the sun warns them. Now, move down to your neck and shoulders and feel the muscles go lose and limp. Continue to do this, relaxing each muscle at a time with the warmth of the sun all the way down to your toes. If you're still awake when you get to your toes, just let the motions of the water gently rock you to sleep. Sweet dreams!

I loved the meditation/hypnosis. I'll try it. My sleeping issue has to do with a little nugget who likes to get up and "party" around 2am. She's almost one and should be sleeping through the night by now; but alas, she's too sweet to hear cry. ;) Thanks for another great hub!

Is self-hypnosis a placebo effect? Cos I can never completely fall for it.. I always convince myself its not doing anything, I think. :(

Good hub though!

Isabella, self-hypnosis and meditation are so closely related. In fact, the only difference is that with self-hypnosis you are talking to yourself and with meditation you are not. But both could cause the placebo effect to kick in since that is about the power of the mind to heal the body. Thanks for commenting!
