TOUGH TIMES

We hear it everywhere: Atrocities against Women, jobs are scarce, people are failing, the future of the Indian Stock Market looks bleak., Let us set the record straight: People are NOT failing – the systems may be failing. We, the people have always been capable and history proves again and again that times like these only make us much more tougher and stronger.

Newscasts are filled with alarming stories, fear, and stress. But inspite of all these gloomy pictures of sorrow, frustration and helplessness we need to be thankful that we are alive and kicking. I for one feel blessed and grateful: for friends, for family, for loved ones near and far, for nature with all its splendour. It’s all about points of view. People don’t fail until they start to believe what everyone else feeds them about how bad things are. So it’s a time of great challenge … and great opportunity.

Its easy to make such an optimistic statement, you may say, but I speak after years of observing people all around me. These cheerful individuals have been my role models. They have often surprised me with their friendly approach and positive demeanour inspite of the many problems that they were facing, ranging from death of loved ones to severe emotional and financial crisis. I don’t want to be preachy but its my personal belief that we are as strong as we think we are. We can let financial problems, family problems and career-related obstacles get us down or we can treat them as challenges that can be triumphed over.

We need to change our way of looking at life. It will determine how much joy, growth and renewed vigour we gain as a result of these challenges. We can wake up every morning with a song in our hearts and a skip in our steps or we can allow the events of the day get us down and out.

As I browsing through an article I came across these pointers that showed how to make the best of tough times. These guidelines are relevant to each one of us and may help to motivate and inspire us when situations look gloomy.

  • Use the opportunity to discover new things about yourself: your likes and dislikes, your passion, what is essential to you.
  • In your career, choose to carry out your work with diligence and sincerity. If someone comes to you with a problem listen with empathy and with heart. Now more than ever, it is noticed and remembered.
  • Realize the depth of your inner power and determination. Realize that no one can take who you truly are away from you.
  • As your heart opens through the uncertainty or fear or pain you may be feeling, offer that up to the bigger Life which is pulsating within your life and dare to ask the right questions, celebrate all that you have, give thanks.
  • Assess, celebrate, draft new plans and dare to envision clearly.

We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the “heroes” and “sheroes” of our lifetime.

I would like to end by saying that Happiness, fulfilment and success can happen step by step. Over time … not overnight. In the process of achieving all this we must be willing to change. And as the saying goes while opening our arms to change, let us not let go of our values.

Wishing you an amazing, daring new year, filled with happiness, goodwill and prosperity.
