Wheel of Life
63Strategic Thinking To Improve Your Life
Beginning of this year(2008), I have learned one from a seminar that I would like to share for your life improvement. It's about strategic thinking that called "Wheel of Life"
Have you ever done the "Wheel of Life" exercise?
It's a favorite staple of the coaching industry. You take a blank piece of paper, and draw a large round cloch on a page. You know, big circle, cennter point, arms from the center point to the outer circle like the numbers on a clock.
It almost looks like a big pie slices in to pieces. To make this easy for you, I've included one the you can download and print out for using in this exercise.
Each slice of the pie represents a key area of your life. Labeleach piece with titles meaningful to you. Popular examples are "health, wealth, recreation, family, relationships, spirituality, charity, education, career, etc."
Now imagine that the center of pie represents ZERO, and the outer egde of the circle represents that area of your life as a perfect TEN. You then rate each area of your life based upon your current satisfaction level with that area. For example, may be your relationships are at 6, your health is at 7, your income is at 4, your career is at 5, your spirituality is at 8, etc.
Make a little mark on each slice to represent the score for each area. Then join each mark together to get a weird wobbly shaped wheel of life.
I may never have met you in person, but I'm pretty sure that you did't score yourself a perfect TEN in each key life area. If you did, then send $10,000 to your favorite 5 charities...good for you. In my long time years ago of doing this I have yet to meet a perfect TEN in all 12 areas!
Obviously a "Wheel of Life" that is out of balance will crash at any speed above a slow crawl. That's why often our lives seem so crazy the minute we start moving in any direction quickly. It's like the proverbial shopping cart at the grocery store...one bad wheel causes accidents!
Many of us are acutely aware that our lives are out of balance. The big question is, "What do I do about it?"
That's where Strategic Thinking plays an important role. It is critical thatyou take time each and every day to do nothing but just think. Here's an example of what one extremely successful person that I know (he/she's a multi-millionaire) does each day.
He/She gets up at 6 am every morning Monday to Friday. He/She puts on a jogging suit. He then marches out the door and starts walking -- a brisk walk, not a jog. He walks for about 35 minutes before going back into his/her house. That's his/her daily walk -- keep in mind he/she gets up one half hour earlier than required to get ready to go into the office of his/her company each day.
On the walk he/she focuses in his breathing for 5 minutes, just quietly walking into the day. He/She then does about 5 minutes of thinking about everything that he/she's grateful for having in his/her life. Then he/she pictures his/her day, week, month and year for about 10 minutes. By then he/she has been walking 20 minutes, and he/she's wide awake, energized. For the remainder of his/her walk (usually on the way back to his/her house) he/she focuses the remainder of his/her time on Strategic Thinking.
His/Her "Strategic Thinking" usually revolves around KEY AREA on his/her "Wheel of Life" that he/she breaks down into smaller areas of self-improvement --- things he/she can work on to improve the overall balance in his/her life.
For example, let's say one KEY AREA was "Health." You can break "Health" into sub-categories so you can focus your improvement... such as work on Flexibility, Strength, Cardio, Diet, and Stress Management. Next, find books related to each sub-category, and bgin your own self-education.
So there you have it. Let take a minimum of 30 minutes each day at least 5 days a week just for yourself for the next 21 days. Give yourself the gift od personal quiet time so you can practice Strategic Thinking on all of the important areas of your life. Seperate yourself from the masses that live from crisis to crisis in reaction mode from dawn 'til dusk. Watch the amazing changes unfold in YOUR LIFE!
In additional, every end of the day finish working I have question myself to improvement that I have done for several years. The questions are:
1. I know, what I have done?
2. What does the purpose I have done?
3. How many percent(%)of the results that I expected?
4. What were the good things I have done?
5. What were the bad things I have done?
6. If I could get back, what I can do differently or do the same?
7. Who would be the part of helping to get it better?
Don't underestimate the effectiveness of this. Let practice it, and it's easy to shift your entire mindset and improve YOUR LIFE.
