Frustrations abound
Lordy, Lordy, Lordy! I am so frustrated I can spit. You know you are living in an alternatively governed country when your internet access is affected. At the moment, in the country where I reside, I can't mention the name as Big Brother is listening in, Twitter, Virtual Tree friends, Blogger, Wordpress and other Nings are being blocked. This means one can't give status updates and update one's blog which is all very very very very frustrating. Facebook works intermittently and You Tube has been blocked for over a month now.
Being very cunning, many of us accessed Youtube and other blocked sites by using different proxies which are freely available on the internet. So, if you have a Big Brother at your workplace who blocks staff from accessing personal emails, Facebook, Hubpages and other fun sites, you can continue to access them through these Proxies. Unfortunately, our Big Brother must have been chatting to that old man who came up with all the wise sayings we like to quote from time to time. Many of the proxies we use to bypass this are also now being blocked.
It's getting very difficult to get images off the internet as 70% of the time images are blocked. So, the hub I was going to do to commemorate the anniversary of the T Square incident in the capital city some years ago when people were driven over by large vehicles with tracks instead of wheels, is a no-no I'm afraid, as Big Brother is being a blockhead and has blocked all access to anything related to the T square incident. Honestly, what happened to freedom of press, speech and access to websites on the internet.
So, if you are wondering why I have not been active on Twitter, or checking out your excellent videos on Youtube, or updating my blog, or replying to you on Virtually Happy Tree Friends, it is because Big Brother has deemed them to be inappropriate sites at this time. I might just read something I shouldn't and be intellectually impaired and damaged for the rest of my life. It is nothing personal I have against you and I am not deliberately ignoring you. It is completely out of my control.
I better stop before the marching boots arrive to carry me away. If you do wish to leave a comment, please be so kind as to refrain from using the terms used for describing the particular form of government that loves being a Big Brother, and please please please do not mention the name of the country I reside in. I'd hate for Big Brother to be an even bigger blockhead and block Hubpages for my inappropriate content!

well that just stinks. humph. I have crossed my arms and am glaring in protest of the BB and his blockages. Now I am sticking out my tongue at BB. Hopefully now he will do some unblocking. Hope I haven't inadvertently caused him to block more because he seems like an ornery old coot who would do that sort of thing...Seriously, though--hope that ends for you soon. That is certainly not ok. :(

It's just that access to certain things are restricted at the moment! And really, in the big scheme of things it's a luxury. How spoiled we are, twenty years ago we didn't have the internet and no I throw a tantrum when BB blocks stuff! lol I should get a life!
Thanks Cindy for explaining all this. I had no idea it was so bad. Really puts a cramp in your writing style! especially the graphics thing......that would bother me a lot. I integrate graphics into just about everything I write.

Yeah, had the visit after the 9/11 thing because I'd had a Saudi student in my class who'd shown strange behaviour and then disappeared two days before 9/11

Putaruru is a contender, but not close enough to the mountains either. I'm still working on it. Ah, all is explained. I remember a few years back, when Google - a staunch supporter of (the f word, rhymes with geedom) on the Internet, agreed with a particular gov't to help them block certain items, imagery and words. One of these words was de - mah - crah - see. Naturally, there was an international uproar, and just as naturally, nothing was done about it.

Cindy: Hey, really it's not so bad. You can drink, travel, earn money as a visitor, live within your income, and within surprisingly broad limits express your opinions. As long as you're not overtly a pain, and using the circumspection required of any bureaucracy, being it c.. or d.. you most likely have few more constraints than Yarpieland or Godzone. - and the monitoring possibly is less covert than those are which we in the out-flung areas of the Empire suffer under the guise of capitalism.
When you get home, don't expect it all to be sweetness and light, Nasty little drips are the same the world over, and they'll make arseholes of themselves to the limit (and beyond) of they're public position and tiny mentalities. Mostly for personal gain.

Cindy, it must be difficult to write what's on your mind when you have to be so conscious of whether it will be trashed or not. The whole world is headed that way, only here in the US, it's the corporations in charge. n 1983, 50 corporations were in charge of the media. Now it's down to 6.
