When Chat Rooms Help Save The Day!
73Small chat rooms where you can socialize with friends are very welcoming and inviting. Although I do not chat every day, I enjoy being able to log onto a smaller chat room where I know I can talk with a few close friends and express my thoughts freely. Some of my real life friends live far away, so I will talk to them on small chat rooms or on the instant messenger. I also talk to several online friends I have met over the years via instant messenger or on small online chat rooms. Chat rooms can literally help save the day in many different ways that people would not think of right of the bat. There is more to chatting than meets the eye. There have even been some people who made very good friends in chat room and then went on to date and get married. Literally, chat rooms can be a great way to meet people if you are looking to just meet a new friend, causually date, network or more.
1. Chat rooms can save lives:
If someone is ill or in danger they can message their online friends for help. One lady messaged her friends in a chat room to let them know she was having a stroke, which allowed them to contact 911. If she had not been online it might have been awhile before anyone had found her, so being in the right place at the right time is often very fortuitous.
2. Stay in touch with family and friends:
Chat rooms are useful for staying in touch with long distance family and friends. The number of minutes on a cell phone plan are limited and long distance calling plans can be expensive, so talking with family and friends on a small chat room could be an affordable alternative. Personally I still like to call my long distance family and friends, but we all have a grand old time when we get together and have a chat. We can share pictures and catch up and all of our lives simultaneously. Gathering with friends and families in a chat room is like have one big virtual family reunion without paying for airfare!
3. Brainstorm about writing topics:
Most of the ideas I have for writing come out topics I chat about with family and friends. Since I enjoy writing as a hobby I like to write about a topic that strike my interest at the moment, so writing about current discussions with family and friends is very conducive and therapeutic. Sometimes when something has been bothering me I can get the anguish out on paper and feel a world better because I thought things through and saw a solution. However, for the most part it is just enjoyable to let my mind flow and to speak from the heart.
4. Special people come into your life:
If you have ever seen the movie 84, Charing Cross Roadis a story about a used book salesman Frank (Anthony Hopkins) who sends books through the mail to the New Yorker writer Helen (Ann Bancroft). This is a nostalgic movie for writers to watch in general, and for people who love to chat to enjoy in particular. Ann and Frank become pen-pals and close friends, and this movie was one of the reasons I wanted to start writing to people overseas in the first place. Now I mostly chat online, but these conversations via email, instant messenger, and small chat rooms all help to save some pretty lousy days. Chat rooms are places were you can make new friends and stay in touch with people you care about.

Chatting can be a nice pastime indeed. Nowadays I use msn most of the time. My significant other lives quite some distance away from me and chatting is a great way to keep the contact between the weekends. I’m not the type for long telephone conversations, but if you are and you want to cut down on costs, Skype and the likes provide a good way to do that.

84, Charing Cross Road is based on a book about a true correspondence between an American writer and a British booksaleman. When I first saw this movie I was 12 and it made me want to start writing to people in other countries. Although the book probably goes into more depth, I liked how the movie showed two people writing to each other and how they often can know things about each other that people in their day to day lives would not. It is a very touching movie that touches upon human relationships and I enjoyed seeing it again a few day ago.

I have already written several hubs about chat room safety and this is not the topic of this hub. This hub is about the good things chat rooms can do.
Chatrooms aren't the only internet communications to have helped people. There have been people who've used twitter to save their lives as well.

Yes, chatrooms are good for gainig friends. There are also MSN and Yahoo Groups to get in with smaller chatrooms too. Most time you have already met the person whom you are chatting with. It is wonderful to actually talk to one of the friends you met on-line.

I´m not a big online chatting fan but I understand the appealing of chat rooms where friends can spend some time "talking" to each other. For me the closest thing to chatting that I do it´s participating in some forums and commenting here in HP ;).

you know sweetie pie, when i started taking parts in tournaments overseas and each time i would be away for more than a month i would miss my fiancee so much that i called her every single day and spend nearly 2 to 3 hours chatting with her. that made my mobile phone bill rake up to thousands of dollars and it kept on increasing till it came to the point where my monthly pay cheque wasnt enough to cover the bills and i had to use my savings. finally serious action was needed to be taken and through our friends advice we both joined MSN MESSENGER bought web cams and headphones and guess what? we can talk for hours, looking at each others face, for as long as we want and all these FOR FREE!!! i totally related to what you said in the 3rd para and chatrooms indeed saved my day. thank you so much for the wonderful hub. keep it coming dear.
It is nice to focus on the good aspects of chat rooms. In fact, the geniuses that invented them never had the bad stuff in mind!
If it wasn't for a chat room, I would not have met one of my dearest friends. It was about 7 years ago that we met in a room and a few months later met in person. We've been good friends since, even though we live in different countries.
