When Dwarf Bunnies are Chewing up Your House
78
Dwarf bunnies make charming little pets and as house rabbits can be a real pleasure scampering around your home. That is, unless they start nibbling your furniture and fittings.
Why Dwarf Bunnies Chew
There are many reasons your dwarf bunny will start chewing the furniture. The main reason is that their teeth are constantly growing and need to be worn down. If your bunnies can't wear down their teeth, they will end up with serious dental and health problems. So it is no wonder they will chew on things they find around your home.
Chewing is also a bunnies way of testing its environment, as well as a sign of boredom. As your dwarf bunnies don't know what is important to you or dangerous, you may find them chewing a chair leg or electrical cable.
Preparation is the Key to Prevention
To keep your home and dwarf bunnies safe, plan out which rooms your bunnies will be allowed to run around freely. Make sure that all electrical wires are hidden away. Either allow your bunnies free access around furniture or block off their access completely, leaving a small gap will tempt them into making it bigger.
Block off access to rooms that are to be out of bounds to your bunnies. Consistency is important here, so stick to your choices. If you let your bunnies into rooms occasionally they will still want to go in on other days. This is a big cause of chewed carpets and door frames. After all, they don't know why the rules have changed.
Chewing Distractions
Preparation will limit damage, but you still have to provide alternatives for your dwarf bunnies to chew. Otherwise they will just try harder to find something to wear down their teeth.
Wooden rabbit toys are available in all shapes and sizes, including willow balls and bundles of sticks that your bunnies can chew and play with to prevent boredom. You can also give your bunnies household cardboard tubes, which are free and provide hours of chewing amusement.
With enough alternatives to chew, your should find that there are only occasional times when your dwarf bunnies chew something in your house they shouldn't.
