Learning How To Live Again When They Move Off To College

My daughter is embarking on a new adventure in her life. She's finally graduated high school and is now on her way to college. Wow we finally made it! Which has been our goal for ever....her working hard to make good grades, getting involved in extra activities to gain scholorships and even doing some community services to open new avenues.

All in which I am very proud of her, but did her scholarship really have to take her out of the state? A scholarship that is taking her 5 hours away from home. Great for her, happy for her but a little sad for me.

I've spent most of their lives raising and caring for her and her sister trying to prepare them for their journey in life, and yes neglected my own.

Discovering who I am again doesn't seem to be a simple task as it was before I had children. The fact of course that I am older but its more than that, it's realizing that the things that were in my life before I had my children aren't quite as appealing today as they were in days gone by.

Lets face it I have a little more wisdom, a little more causcious and definately more wrinkles now. So I've come up with a list of activities to try to get my life back out into the world and I thought I would list them here in case there are others embarking on the same road I am.

1. Learning a new skill, I was thinking of cake decorating, writing and going to home depo to learn how to install new counter tops in my kitchen.

2. Instead of running home and cooking dinner I've decided a couple of times a week to contact a different friend each night and go to a restaurant.

3. I thought of joining a bowling league, not that I can bowl that well, well actually not that I can bowl at all but I thought maybe by joining a league I'll get the hang of it eventually.

4. Turning my ok front yard into a really pretty yard by planting flowers that don't really require alot of elbow work and maintain for the most part on their own.

5. I already work a full time job but I was thinking a part time job would be a great way to meet new people and make money at the same time.

6. Cleaning the house more and storing the yesterday memories into a place where she'll be able to get to them when and if she ever wants them.

These are just a few things I have come up with to slip my way back into life. Its great to watch her take her place in this world but its a little difficult to let go. I found my little girl that thought I hung the moon turn into a woman that really doesn't find much use for me in her life right now. I totally understand it and would probably be worried if she were any other way, but with that being said watching yesterday fly out the door makes me a bit sad and longing for what was and standing strong for today.
