The First Phonecall

The First Phonecall
The First Phonecall

Even as we prepare to exit the noughties, the timeless question continues to be asked "When do I call after the first date?"

Is sooner better?  How long do I need to wait?  What will happen if I don't call?

Here are a few pointers to guide you next time you need to plan that post first date phonecall.

Contact her soon only if you are 100% sure she is head over heels in love with you-
I must admit that I usually recommend that the early contact is best left out of the first date routine.  It can make you look needy.

Wait two days before you call-
The two day rule has been passed down through dating folk lore since the telephone was invented.  There are a number of reasons why this rule is is very important.  Firstly, calling her too soon will make you look overly keen.  This can make a woman feel suffocated especially if she has yet to establish whether she likes you or not.  Secondly, your scarcity makes you more appealing.  By waiting a couple of days she begins to wonder why you haven't called.  This is especially potent if she is used to getting phonecalls very quickly after a date by guys telling her how much they love her.

When you call make sure you have something to say- A simple reference to something she might have mentioned on the first date eg. a visit to her Aunt Melba will make her know you were listening and are generally interested.  Also have arrangements in mind for your next date.  Do not succumb to your anxiety.

Keep the first conversation short-
Your prime aims should be to let her know that you enjoyed the first date and to arrange a second date.  You don't want to run out of topics to talk about for your next date and you may have caught her at a bad time.

Smile while you talk-
Smiling will make your voice sound happier and you will be in a better state of mind when you make the phonecall.

Avoid text messaging-
While SMS is a minimal risk way of communicating, arrangements are best made with a phonecall.  Restrain yourself from sending her multiple strings of SMS messages.  Too much contact from a stranger = irritating & clingy.

Keep your promise to call back-
If you said you will call her, make sure you call back.  Even if this means to tell her that you do not feel there was any chemistry.  It is better to do this sooner rather than later.

Happy dating!
