When committing what you read to memory, what time of day is the best and why?

Read and Reflect

When you want to remember what you read, time of day may not be the only factor present. You should choose whatever time of day you feel most alert, most energized and the least distracted. If first thing in the morning, you are thinking about all the things you need to do, that's not a good time. If right before bed, you are too mentally exhausted to focus, that's not a good time either. Only you know what your best time it. Try a few different times, morning, mid-afternoon, after dinner, before bed, and really think about what time is best for you.

Also, journaling is an excellent way to retain what you remember. You can right down the main points, you can write down things that really jump out at you, some great quotes, or you can even draw a sketch about what you read.

If you're not into journaling, and all the writing seems like too much work, try reflecting on what you read immediately after you read it. Read a chapter (about 10 pages or so) and stop. Close the book and try to recall what the main points were. Imagine where these things would be useful in your life, or why it's important to remember them. Try connecting it with something you already know. If you find yourself thinking.. "This reminds me of...", dwell on that for a minutes. Linking new information to old information is one of the best ways to keep it tucked away in your memory.

I've been having to remember lines in professional theatre for years now. I have found that mornings (or soon after I wake up - really, regardless of the time) are best; at least for me.
