When is Yoga Bad For Weightloss?
61It seems yoga can do no wrong, the health benefits are endless, even celebrities swear by it as their hallmark of fitness for maintaining their super bodies. Not to mention whenever we think yoga in the media we are always bombarded with images of perfectly sculptured bodies bending over backwards, literally, but for the average person just how safe is this to do? So at the risk of acquiring bad karma in asking this question when is yoga bad for weightloss? I'm going to have to say that the answer to is,well if you end up with a sprained wrist or foot while doing yoga in an attempt to get fit, then it's safe to assume that yoga can be bad for your weightloss.
Reasons for my concern of late has been after reading a recent survey in Time magazine which quotes that with more than 14 million people practicing yoga or tai chi nationwide, up 136% since 2000, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and chiropractors across the country are dealing with the increasing fallout from yoga gone awry. Over the past three years, 13,000 Americans were treated in an emergency room or a doctor's office for yoga-related injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Similarly in the U.K Figures published by Times online shows Bupa hospitals indicate 50,000 people suffer a sports or gym-related injury every day, a twofold increase in the past two years. Many of these are thought to be linked to popular classes such as yoga.
PRACTISING SAFE YOGA
Not all of us are capable of doing instant pretzels with our bodies and If these statistics are close to reality then you could be doing more harm to your body than good. Even I am able to sucessfully do a downward dog pose,but I'm too sceptical about getting any more expiermental without proper instruction from a trained yoga instructor.But on the other hand you cannot sit back and do nothing to improve your health or use the risks as a comfort not to get exercising.These have led me to the following conclusions;
1. Yoga can be beneficial to your health provided you have the proper instruction and guidance from a trained instructor.
2. If you are a beginner then start at the bottom.Know your limits and do not over exert yourself.
3. Use props when you are starting out to help support your body this way you are not over exerting and applying too much pressure on wrists for example or if you use the ball it eases pressure off your spine

- Good Yoga mats improve balance and coordination. Most of us are not balanced, and therefore do much of what we do asymmetrically--for instance, we may be stronger on our right side and weaker on our left. With greater stability, there is less compensation.
- One of the joys of the softness of the yoga mat is that it saves your knees from taking a knock on hard surfaces so I guess this makes the yoga mat your first essential to safe yoga.
- The circular mandala shaped mat is perfect for almost all poses and allows you to define your yoga space and be flexible without worrying about knocking any furniture.CLICK HERE TO BUY 1& GET 1 FREE. - Yoga props can be anything that will assist a pose in any way.
- Yoga props are the key to comfortable poses. Using blocks, straps, chairs or comfortable clothing, ensures control and comfort. These are just few examples of how yoga props can help your practice.
- Yoga props include - True blue wood blocks, true blue foam wedge, straps, quick release belts, yoga props, meditation pillows, handwoven blanket, and yoga belts.
Conclusion:With proper guidance and instruction from a trained instructor and the use of the correct props and tools you can practice yoga safely and effectively and lose weight too.

Thanks for the great info. I agree with Silver Rose. Perhaps it is because traditional Yoga is a sustained and long-term practice - more of a commitment to a healthy lifestyle than the exercise flavor "du jour". It doesn't "work" quickly enough for some, hence the additions and tinkering to produce fast results.
Thanks for the thought provoking topic, Tim, and a belated "Welcome" to Hub Pages.
Thanks for stopping bye and for the good feedback!

You shouldn't get injured if you do traditional yoga as laid out in the ancient sutras.
However many of the new Hollywood hybrids such as "power yoga" which seek to combine aerobics with yoga, are definitely dangerous. The whole point of yoga is to do slow controlled movements to exercise muscles. You are not supposed to introduce aerobic-style momentum into it at all, because as soon as you do, you lose control, put pressure on the joints, and can therefore get injured.
Great hub on a topic that should definitely get more coverage!
