When the Road Forks
68
Went for a drive yesterday and when the road forks, you go left to find yourself at the top of a bluff with a great view of a valley. Quite a hill for somewhere Kansas getting close to the Missouri state line. I'm accustomed to heights like this in the Ozarks, but it is obviously Kansas because of the grasses and distinctive timber. I like the town nearby and the man who has brought me here.
Listening to a song, Dry Grass & Shadows by folk artist, Alela Diane, reminds me of the day on the hill planning a life that includes building a home on a piece of land near one of the great big cities of America, but far enough away to know you are indeed in the countryside.
She sings, "Valley hills overgrown in gold." Her album, To Be Still, is how I feel with this person and the proposition he's presented me. The chorus, "I'm taken back to the dry grass and the shadows," is introduced to me the very next day and plays in my head and breath until day's end.
I myself live like an old man with a bus, fishing boat, pickup truck and a dog. Life turns now and I'm presented with the chance of a lifetime. Settle down with someone and live all the romantic dreams of youth. When you find the person you want to be with, it's easy to know which road to take.
Here is a poem by Alex K.
A Fork In the Road
On the Path of Everlong,
One was walking, tall & strong
And on the road where he was led,
A fork was coming, just ahead.
"Here's a choice I shall be making.
Which new road should I be taking?
Looks like road I'm on is through.
Time for something which is new."
So, he stood & pondered this.
Thinking things he may have missed.
But it seemed there's nothing missing.
Just the wind so lightly hissing.
Nothing helping to decide,
By which path he should abide.
No signs of signs or dusty prints.
No upturned stones or hidden hints.
As he stood a moment more,
The time away the day did wore.
Then he stood another minute
Seeing as there's no sin in it.
"Maybe take another day...
And tomorrow choose my way."
But then when the morning came,
Both the roads still seemed the same.
So he took time to consider,
What is hither, what is wither?
Wither wound off to the West.
Surely this direction's best?
But twas nothing in the least
To show he should not travel East.
Then he wondered what's to gain
By racking roads up in his brain.
Perhaps the point of these two roads
Is not to wonder where to go,
But the point of, maybe, show
That where to go, we shall now know.
"Even if there were some hints,
Why follow someone dusty prints?
Who's to say that man before,
Choose the road I'm hoping for?"
"And with no hints to help along,
I can't blame me for being wrong!
Nothing showing what is right,
Or if left will end my plight."
"Thinking this, why even bother?
Least there's nothing evil more,
One direction or the other
Better than I knew before."
And then so he choose a road!
Picked he up his motherlode.
Onwards proudly so he strode,
Ever confident & bold.
As he walked away, he'd say,
"If there ever came the day,
I'll go and try the other way!
But bother with it?
Never! ... Neigh!"
My inspiration for this hub comes from the Word of the Day provided by The Free Dictionary. The word is an adjective, forficate, and it has the meaning: resembling a fork; divided or separated into two branches.

I think we all reach a fork in the road and have to decide which route to take, some more often than others.
goldentoad and BrianS, Thank you for reading. I like your comments. Kind Regards
Nicely done, Kind Regards. You sound like a very interesting person and I wish you the best with your decision of which road to take down the pathway of life.
My life has had many forks, sometimes I took a wrong turn, but at the time I thought right...maybe even tho' things were hard, it was still right. Anything different would have me with different results, and destinations. Looking at my husband, kids, pets, friends, all brought by the turns I took, I can't complain.
=)) when you see a fork, just go right. It's all good.
=)))
I have to agree with marisuewrites, it will all come out for the best - if that's what you make of it. Thanks for sharing such a thought-provoking hub.
Thought-provoking and at moments lyrical - what more could a reader want? Thanks for sharing.
Love and peace
Tony
