While trying to find free music downloads for my iPod, I find that there are many websites that claim to offer free downloads but in fact they do not. Majority of them allow me to listen to music online but to download is a different story. So here I am sharing my experience while trying to find free music downloads for my iPod.

NOTE: whatever I say below on the websites are purely my personal take on what I experienced. The comments do not suggest whether or not they are scams.

Take this website for example. When I searched for “free music downloads” the website came in one of the top spots. I went in and sure enough, I can listen to music for free. However, the files that I download from it cannot be played. It appeared that all the files are corrupted. This could be a technical glitch. Could be. Anyway, there are rouge websites out there that claim to provide free music download but contain corrupted files that cannot be played. Why? Some of these are in fact run by hackers who prey on people like me trying to find free music downloads for my iPod. The files may be infected with virus and spywares that steal confidential information from users’ computer and can potentially affect the operating system in a bad way.

Some websites like this site requires that its visitors do things like signing up for credit card in exchange to providing free music downloads. While we know that there is no such thing as a free lunch, many such websites never fulfill what they promise. They earn through credit card sign ups or getting users to click on advertisements. Some label them as scams. Unfortunately, most of the time you will never know until you try it out yourselves.

While trying to find free music downloads for my iPod, I came across these real sources of free music:

1. Public domain music downloads.
2. Free song downloads by artists who want to create some publicity by giving one or two free songs from the album.

Then there are the membership sites. These are not totally free. You pay a minimal one-time membership that entitles you to unlimited iPod music downloads for free subsequently. Do take note of their copyright policy before you sign up. Check out a review on one such download portal here.
