David requests a hub

I stayed at the Historic Anchor Inn last night... great rates and the breakfast is phenomenal! Best I have ever had! This place is truly a diamond in the ruff. Its worth writing a little about in your hub if you can find some information on it.

Today I will hopefully get to Florence but I am going to take my time down the Oregon coast... There is a high chance to see some orca I have been told!

Love Dave

Owners comment on the state of their Inn

We are lovingly restoring it bit by bit, but there are 14,000 square feet of finicky plumbing and creaky old growth timbers, so sometimes the drains will empty slowly, the water pressure will have a mind of its own, and the old steam heaters will clank and knock. Truthfully we never know what is going to break next, but we love it anyway.

Historic tidbit from Anchor Inn website

"... just before the war if you wanted to bathe in Lincoln City you had to go to the Green Onion in Nelscott (about six blocks north) and pay five cents to hop in a tub of hot water that progressively got cooler and less fresh and the day went on and number of bathers increased."

KEEP OUT

Oregon is the KEEP OUT state, truth be told. And I'm not talking about the Invasive Species listed at the Oregon.gov 100 most dangerous invaders to keep out site.

Although Crater Lake National Park, Mount Hood, and Bonneville Dam on the Columbia are major tourist attractions, years back the state of Oregon had as its unofficial slogan, VISIT BUT DON'T STAY!!!

Oregon Live explains: It began Jan. 12, 1971, when Tom McCall went on national television and told people to stay out of his state.

Well, not really. Try as he might, though, Tom McCall spent years untangling the message he sent to the world that night.

As McCall prepared to start his second term as Oregon's governor, CBS correspondent Terry Drinkwater asked him to sum up his views on conservation, which had already made him famous.

"Come visit us again and again," McCall said for Drinkwater's national audience. "But for heaven's sake, don't come here to live."

McCall's statement was more than a quip. He had made protection of Oregon's environment and livability the hallmark of his work.

McCall was most concerned about uncontrolled growth. He had seen Oregon's population of 1.7 million in 1960 grow to 2 million 10 years later, and he believed predictions that the rate would increase.

Thousands of acres of farmland around cities had been tilled under for subdivisions, often without regard to how city services or roads would serve them.

The statement - shortened and made famous as "Visit, but don't stay" - was McCall's warning that any place, and especially Oregon, stood to lose its precious livability if it did not prepare for growth and erect tough environmental standards.

Two fine fiction writers live in Portland

FrankWit writes, "Chuck Palahniuk has written many great books... So visit Chuck’s website and give a look around; you can submit stories and read tons of great articles. If you like stories that twist your mind, Chuck is your man. I would recommend picking up Invisible Monsters or Survivor, if you’ve already read Fight Club."

FrankWit has a point, but I believe Ursula LeGuin tops his pick. Not only has LeGuin won award after award in fantasy and science fiction genres but she comes highly recommended by a couple key hubbers. I can't get enough of her Earthsea books and Amanda Severn is waiting for me to read her favorite, The Lathe of Heaven, which I only this moment have discovered online- click on the title for a free read!!!

Final taste... Oregon wine!

He's in a gorgeous spot now! That drive down the coast in Oregon was the best part of our trip from Washington to California. We would have loved to not have to be in a car. He's lucky! Hope he gets to take lots of photos.

Frieda, David purchased a new camera in Portland after losing the one he has been using :( so, I imagine he is shooting away! I have only seen the coast from Vancouver to Portland, so I am not familiar with the portion of Oregon coast he is currently traveling. Perhaps some day I will visit what I missed-- thanks for the enthusiastic review!

Thanks, B

This was a fun one to contemplate what life must be like in a place like Oregon.

Last night Dave reported that his knee pain turned out to be a muscle pain, which is much better in terms of healing. He put the miles on today, so he must be doing far better.

Sure seems to be a beautiful area. Enjoyed going through the Anchor Inn website too.

But the best news is in Craig's comment .... am happy to learn that it was only muscle pain!

Yep, I agree with both of you.

In case you miss me, I'm off to California to see Rob's show. Will write more when I return this weekend. Have a great rest of the week...
