Royal Fried Chicken

Royal Fried Chicken on Washington Street

Royal Fried Chicken

This fried chicken/fast food place recently opened (Fall 2008) at 3383 Washington street. The prices are ridiculously cheap and the food is pretty darn good. They have ice cream even in the winter! The guy who runs the place said that they sell quite few scoops even when it's cold outside.

I ordered some fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and a spinach roll. The chicken tastes a little like Popeye chicken because there's some spice in it that's a little hot, not like the KFC kind of spice. The mashed potatoes were nothing spectacular but I didn't really expect anything amazing from a fast food place. The spinach roll was okay too. I'd definitely go back the next time I have a craving for fried chicken. It's really good.

So how cheap is the food? Well, you can get a whole bucket for 10 pieces of chicken with large fries and a 2 L bottle of soda for only $11.99. Prices go up steadily to 35 pieces for $31.88. If buckets of chicken are too much, they also have smaller boxes of 2 to 9 pieces too. The 2-piece snack box with mash potatoes and a roll is only $3.95. By the way, chuck the roll, it sucks. You can also have rice instead of potatoes.

They also have burgers (beef, chicken, fish) as well. Popcorn chicken is on the menu too. I was initially attracted by the fact that they have gyro but haven't tried that yet. The aroma of fried chicken was difficult to resist that day. The menu is actually quite extensive with ribs, buffalo wings, salads, beef patties, and desserts.

If you're in the neighborhood, give this place a try.

Joy Rice China Cafe

This is a new restaurant that opened in late 2008. It's a good addition to the other small restaurants in the area on Washington street. The interior has some nice Chinese paintings and pictures. The decor is very colorful. There are about 9 or 10 tables and people rarely eat there. The lady who runs the place is very nice and will chat with you and make small talk. She works very hard. One of the last times I was there, she told me that they do not close except for Thanksgiving. I believe her because I passed by and saw the lights on when I was coming home from a Christmas dinner. I bet they were the only restaurant in the area open on that day!

Like most other Chinese restaurants, there are many choices with lunch specials and all day specials. So far everything I've tried there is very good. I am linking the Yelp page below if you want to see more reviews. I really like their crispy fried shrimp because the batter is light like tempura batter. The lunch special is a pretty good deal for the huge box of food that you get.

If you're in the area and want to try a new Chinese food place, check this place out! It's at 3510 Washington Street in Jamaica Plain.

The Real Deal

This place opened up in the middle of 2008 in a spot previously occupied by at least two other restaurants in the past 5 years. Hopefully Real Deal stays because it's a great sandwich place. The prices are quite reasonable for the quality of the food that you get here. They have pizza slices that are big, delicious, and only a few bucks. I usually saunter over to the display and see which one looks like it just came out of the oven and order that. It's the cheapest thing to have for lunch. You can also get whole pizzas if you like.

The deli sandwiches are the real draw here. Some of their sandwiches are depicted in cartoon form on the wall as part of their decor. One of the pictures here show one of those cartoons. All of the sandwiches and wraps have unique names such as the "Tony Soprano," which is a roast beef wrap with horseradish sauce. It's pretty good. They use Boar's Head cold-cuts, in case that means anything to you.

The burgers here are cooked the way you like. It took quite a while for mine to cook so if you're into this kind of thing, bring a book to read while you wait. They fry the thick burgers and honestly, there was a little too much char on mine, which was ordered medium. This was not my favorite thing here.

They also have soups and a display case full of baked goods. The clam chowder is pretty good for dunking your pizza crusts. I haven't tried the other soups but they're comparable to most soups that you would get at any other place. The baked goods are awesome! If you like stuff with icing, they usually have several cupcakes with various types of sugary goodness. I personally like their chocolate chip cookies for only a buck each. They're made in house. The other baked goodies are made by another bakery. Oh, the black & white cookies are also very good.

There are several tables but depending on the time of day, you might or might not get a seat. Late afternoon is good for getting a seat. If you're into good American food, try this place.

The orange line and commuter rail go through Jamaica Plain. Forest Hills is at the end of the orange line and also a commuter rail stop. Green Street and Stony Brook stations are also on the orange line. If you want to go to the Sam Adams Brewery tour, take the orange line to Stony Brook and it's a short walk from there.
