If you are looking to get your writing published, there are a number of things you should do. First of all perfect your work. Consider starting/joining a writer's group to meet with once a week or so and critique each other's writing.

When you feel that your writing is as good as it can be, then you need to find an agent. Pick up the most recent copy of Writer's Digest's Guide to Literary Agents and make friends with it. You should look through it for agents that represent the genre you write in, and are open to queries. Take note of how they prefer to be contacted and what format they prefer query letters to be in, write your query letter, and send it in.

If you write an interesting query letter and your book sounds good and marketable the agent will contact you and request your manuscript and probably a synopsis or outline. Hopefully those please the agent, and they will be willing to represent you. If so they will send your work to publishing houses hoping to sell it, and with some luck and good timing you will eventually see your book in print.
