Where’s the Media on Unemployment

Popularizing the Issues, How Legislation Occurs
While I will probably never figure out all the motivations and internal workings of our Congress and Legislative process, I am sure of one thing. An old adage seems to always apply, no matter how stupid or unworthy a particular piece of legislation appears to be. For example did you know there is a Federal law regulating the number of raisins in raisin bread or that there is a proposal to grant tax credits to mothers that breastfeed?
Apparently “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” when it comes to either state or federal consideration. Whether the squeak comes from lobbyists or the media, the resulting Congressional time wasted is beyond lunacy. Just run a quick search for dumb laws and the results are not only funny, but sobering in the fact we pointlessly wasted untold amounts of Congressional and Bureaucratic time and tax money in, researching, drafting, negotiating and voting on this crap. Also to the issue of time waste are the Congressional hearings into “steroid use in sports,” another gargantuan political concern thankfully brought to our leaders attention via the media.
Remember the McDonald’s spilled coffee lawsuit? How much media play was given to that incident? As a result we now have regulations as to the serving temperatures of hot beverages. Given enough time and bandwidth the list could go on and on.
As the Government and Media waste time on the issues of Healthcare Reform and Cap In Trade policies, there are some incredibly difficult situations on the immediate horizon that are being ignored. And while the proposed legislations above perhaps have merit, at least premise, they should not be on the agenda when Unemployment and Foreclosures are at the highest levels in history.
The catastrophic results of which will come as a combination of these two troubling matters are, and should, in this country, be unimaginable and unthinkable. Yet they are very soon to be reality and have been ignored by the mainstream media and thereby our legislators whom today are driven by party goals, poll numbers and extremist lobbying efforts.
Ignoring the Numbers
With 14.5 million people out of work and the economy still shedding jobs at an incredible rate, what will happen to these people and our society when the foreclosure and eviction hammers fall. Of the estimated 114.8 million households in the US as of January 2010, 12.6 % of these will most likely be lost. With the estimated population of the US at 305.6 million and a Census Bureau calculation of an average of 2.67 persons per household the number of homeless in the US could increase by 38.7 million.
Just reporting the numbers as released each month apparently isn't getting anyone's attention.
Social Impact
With loss equivalent income producing jobs unlikely, and unemployment benefits, which are barely supporting these households at a subsistence level running out, by Christmas millions of Americans will be completely financially devastated, by next year the numbers will be beyond cataclysmic levels.
As the foreclosure wolves shift into high gear, many of whom were granted new life by TARP bailouts, evidenced by increasing foreclosure filings in July 2009 and expected to climb, consumer spending may be relegated to yard and moving sales, the proceeds of which will most likely be put into motor homes, tents and gasoline as the recently homeless masses head to the warmer climates of the South.
As apathy and hunger grow so shall the crime rate, and educational rates will plummet with millions of homeless children wandering with their parents in search of a new start. A start that may not come. Economic recovery could be years perhaps decades away, if ever.
Questioning the Apocalypse
Am I just raising hysteria, or is this a very real possibility? Unfortunately with the present governmental inaction and the drive to “transform” our Republic into the Liberal Progressive Ideal, these impending dooms are a very real probability. Is this the national crisis the administration is rumored to be longingly awaiting, or perhaps orchestrating, to assume a long coveted total control?
It is incredibly perplexing to me how these major issues can be going unnoticed, by the Media and our Representation. You would think even the liberally biased media would be shouting to the rafters, given their penchant for the liberal ideals that conceived the Community Reinvestment Act and its tenets of everyone deserves a home. Yet the media offers only a silence, which is deafening to those on the brink of disaster. Instead media concerns are directed towards the trappings of “transformation.”
Why cannot these politicians see beyond the poll numbers and party politics to the imminent implosion of society? Haven’t they been telling us how much are smarter they are than we, and that they know what’s best for us? Is this what’s best, or what they want?
To allow this to occur should be unconscionable. Are the Media and our Government turning a blind eye towards the average American that has been bloodied by Government actions and will be irrevocably damaged by their inaction?
Simple Solution to Alleviate the Pressure
This is most likely a very hard one to fix, and is definitely the topic of our time, but it doesn’t take a lot of brainpower to figure out ways to stem the coming foreclosure waterfall. At a minimum, to at least stay the impending homelessness of millions, a moratorium on foreclosures of primary residences of the unemployed should be immediately put into place via Executive Order with the full backing of Congress.
Mortgages in default should then automatically be put under administrative mitigation via temporary suspension and, similar to FHA partial claim rules, have the defaulted payments (without penalty) shifted to the rear of the mortgage, essentially extending mortgage life. The time period of such extension should be tied to economic recovery.
Alleviating the pressure of loss on the American family will go a long way towards beginning full economic recovery and avoid an impending social disaster.
This one non-partisan act is a simple means circumvent a horrific future.
Start The Talking Heads and Action Will Occur
As with most all other congressional action, this wheel should be squeaking loudly. These two issues should be dominating TV and Radio airtime and both sides of the aisle should have them ringing in their collective ears, and haunting their sleep.
With the Government now back from vacation this “solution” should be first on the agenda. What would it take a day, maybe two?
Or never will be, if the media continues to ignore a legitimate issue and doesn’t popularize it and drive it. The “Forth Estate” brags of its deeds and protections, and uses the idea of responsibility to the public as defense, well here is a subject worthy of your esteemed responsibility and your many voices should be heard echoing and amplifying ours.
Why the silence?

Great hubbing,
The mainstream media is completely useless. They have an agenda, pure and simple. By the way, the woman who filed a law suit about hot coffee was mutilated. The coffee temperature went far beyond normal standards. Had the coffee been heated to accepted temperatures, she would have been burned, but as it turned out her genitals were destroyed. The medial got this one all wrong. No surprise there!

Thank you for your praise, I hate you see the truth as I do. I loath that it must be recognized as it is. Fortunately there are still a few us to see it and rebel. I plead your assistance (and anyone else reading this) in spreading the word and lending your voice to mine and the millions I am attempting to champion. I see these two issues combined as the single most devastating event that could or has ever been perpetrated on the American people. This one caused purely and only by government intervention in the free market. The forced unemployed Americans are clearly the victims.
Help me shout till we are heard and a stopgap measure as I outlined above is in place. I am attempting to get recognition from the major conservative news and commentary outlets to carry our message and warning to higher levels. But time is a luxury we as a people no longer have actions must be swift. Perhaps like Van Jones, enough voices in unison will produce the pressure to disrupt the plan and force the required solution.
Well written indeed. And a very food topic to write a hub on. I did not know about the raisin bread. And I do think that the media should start thinking about those unemployed a bit more.
Great post! I've been unemployed since May. Many of my friends are as well. The news wants to report that the recession is over. But nothing will return to "normal" until we get everyone working again.
TcTroi,
Thank you for your comment, like you I know too many folks that have been unemployed for months, some are pushing a year which is the motivation for writing the hub. In my view we are in a vicious economic cycle that will not be broken until the pressure on the Amercian family is relieved. We all have to shout loudly, and the media needs to cover it.
I think you did a wonderful job writing your post, now lets see if the media or the president or even the finance senate could read what is going on. My last check for unemployment was the end of aug 2009, I am nervous about not paying my bills, I can not find a job anywhere and I have applied even 75 miles from my home and still nothing. when Michael Jackson died the media was all over that days after days, and I understand he was a very popular person and was loved deeply, well we are very popular people too and we are loved deeply as well so why is it that this situation is not being covered by the media? I say that once we all go homeless and there is alot of us their ratings will go down cause we wont have tivs to watch then they are going to thin WOW I SHOULD OF COVERED THOSE POEOPLE ON UNEMPLOYMENT.
Angela
Thank you for visting my hub and for your compliment. I can not tell you how many stories just like yours I have heard, its heartbreaking and the main reason I wrote the hub.
Someone has to shout loud enough for us all to be heard. I have been trying through my hub and I have contacted some members of the opinion media. I will be publishing an open copy of that letter soon. I have been waiting for some type of response before I do.
As to your situation, I know Unemployment benefits have been extended beyond the normal period, some up to another twenty weeks, but in some cases they will not automatically kick in, you have to apply for them. Hopefully this is your situation. Good Luck to you and your family, many of us are praying for you and screaming loudly to be heard.

Another good job; thoroughly researched and well written. The National Media should be screaming about what you are writing about here. But of course they are so far in the tank for the Anointed One they threw Objectivity out the window a long time ago.
As for as this administration putting in stop gap measures to halt the inevitable, forget that, it's not going to happen.
Things are going exactly as planned. In order for this newly elected Oligarchy to bring about the devolution of Capitalism, they first have to reduce the people to hopelessness. Then and only then will they give up on their dream of Freedom and Independence and turn their lives over to their benevolent big brother; The Federal Government!
