Where's the line? Or wine?

Mmmm....I pulled the coffee from the fridge and popped the plastic lid from the top. I enjoy coffee but I love the aroma. Just the scent of fresh ground coffee makes me happy. I read somewhere that the smell of coffee beans or coffee brewing can release endorphins in the brain. Yeah, I get it. Totally believe that one because it happens every time I stick my nose next to the tin and breathe in deep.
Aaaahhh.
Yeah, kinda like a little bit of Heaven. So anyway, I like coffee. Drinking it, not just smelling it. But I don't make it a lot at home. It's a laziness thing really. You know how we midwestern country girls love our iced tea. Well, I make my tea in the coffeepot. No boiling bags in a pot on the stove for me! I take the easy way and use an automatic brewer. Convenient, yet also a pain in the ass when you actually do want to make coffee. Or, rather when you want to make tea again afteryou've made coffee. Because then, at least when you're at my house, you have to wash all the pieces of the contraption before you can use it again. You know, the filter thingy and the glass pouring doohickey. Yes, those ARE the technical terms...ask anyone. But, back on point, I HATE when my tea tastes like coffee, so hence the washing out. All that so you understand why I don't often make coffee at home.
Unless I need it.
You probably don't know this about me, but I am a woman of many vices. Caffeine being one. Yes, there are times I need coffee. Strong coffee. Or unhealthy amounts of a sickeningly sweet carbonated beverage that shall remain nameless. And this morning is one of those moments.
I woke up this morning feeling a little less than perky. No, I don't have the swine flu. Two words...Apple Wine.
Of course, I am assuming any ill feelings can be attributed to the glasses I was indulging in just, oh, five hours ago. The issue isn't how I feel this morning, or even how much I had last night. The issue I am struggling with is when does a drink become too much? When does social drinking become a problem? How do you know if you're on a path you need to get off of? Where's the line between "ok" and "uhoh" ?
Long story short...(too late, I know)....I sort of try to monitor that field with myself. I know I could very easily fall into that hole where wine, beer or hard liquor becomes a staple. When I need it instead of want it. When I think I can say no, but know I can't. All this because as I was out on a much needed, long awaited date night with my husband last night, I was thinking about wine.
The entire night, my mind kept reminding me of the brand new bottle I had at home, calling my name. Yeah, sad I know. I didn't want to think about it. I wanted to be excited about the movie or feeling good about dinner. But I couldn't get my mind off that wine at home. The wine that was there for no good reason other than that my mom had gone on the wine trail with some friends earlier that day and bought her wine-o daughter a bottle.
The best wine I think, wait I know, I have ever had. The kind that gets me in trouble because it goes down so smoothly. The kind that, before I know it, I've drank a whole bottle in one sitting. It tasted like apple juice. Like sweet apple juice.
I know people drink all the time, around the world to varying degrees and no one ever wonders if they have a problem. I know people I see all the time that have indulged in a few bottles themselves on many occasions. But, still I wonder about myself.
I'm laughing at myself rereading this because I get that picture in my head of Homer Simpson when he hears anything that sounds like a food. You know tongue lolling out and drooling. Kind of how I was feeling reliving the apple wine! Not a good sign!! Haha
Not my cup of tea...
Those who know me well can tell you that I am not an open book. In fact fairly far from it in many respects. Which is why I'm not going into any further detail. Talking about stuff like this, my personal life stuff, isn't easy for me. But, I needed to get it out so there it is. I just needed to laugh about it a little.
But, I feel a lot better now. And, after a too long, scalding hot shower and a pot of coffee, I'm off to church to pray for myself and hope someone absolves my sins.
Not that wine drinking should be a sin. I mean, heck Jesus drank wine. And there's no way Heaven can not have wine.
And cake. There better be cake....

Ah.. this hub hit some good spots with me! I, too, am a coffee girl that was raised on sweet tea! You need two machines, don't you!!! The other point was, I had never had apple wine, but a neighbor (2 nights) ago, brought down a bottle of homemade apple wine. It was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.!! Not something I'd drink often because it was a bit sweet, but what a kick it had!!! I think that once you consider there is a 'line' you need to pay attention to it. You've brought up some great points we do need to keep an eye on!
I have written about places that were great for meeting men, and my favorite - above all - is the coffee aisle of the grocery store. I didn't consider the endorphin angle, but it makes perfect sense in light of my 'research'!!! The best men can be met in the coffee aisle, not the milk aisle! Let's do coffee J!!!! Oh, is there a 'line' when a lot of coffee is too much? Nah......
Froggy, Froggy Froggy, no no no!! You are gonna have to come and have nice big glass of J's sweet tea! You'll never go hot again :D LOL leave it to you to like a green wine hehe
Candie, my love! Too much coffee is like too much money, right? not possible! :D If only they'd let you pop the lids on the coffee tins in the store and take a nice long smell!! We'd be happier people lol I guess you live right there in the heart of coffee land, huh. Or well, pretty close anyhow :D I agree, a coffee date. And I'll bring the Apple Wine ;)
I too love ice tea :) And I'm also a lazy coffee maker when at home, lol. That said, I have stopped drinking as of about five years ago because I made myself so awfully sick "having a good time" one too many times. Alcoholism runs rampant in my family so when I found myself drinking a beer to unwind or always hanging out with friends at the bar instead of at a movie, or at dinner I quit cold turkey to avoid a possible problem for myself.
I have to tell you I agree that Heaven must have cake, yellow cake with chocolate frosting. If it doesn't, I don't want to go. :) Great hub, Janetta.
Thanks Lissa!! I tellya-if Heaven doesn't have yellow cake with chocolate icing, you'll have to stop by my parents house lol--it's my dad's favorite and the only kind my mom ever makes! haha :D
That's fantastic :) That's the kind my mom usually makes too :)
Well , I've heard of 'pub crawls' in Australia , but it looks like if I ever get to the US of A, I'm gonna have to do and "Aisle crawl" .
MMMMM yellow cake with chocolate icing your Dad sure has good taste. ;-)
Good to see you Ag!! *big hug* been missing ya ;) If you ever come to the good ole USA you'd better swing by here for a glass of wine LOL
First off, I LOVE the picture of Homer! Compliments your hub quite well indeed! I too am a loyal lover of coffee...The smell, the taste, the satisfaction in it all...Yes I truly love coffee. And apple cider! Especially on cold days! Wine? Not so much...every wine I've ever had is just too sour for me. But I love my sweet drinks. Can't go a day without soda...I know it's bad. Water is never my choice of drink. Can't explain it. It makes me gag. I just hate the taste...because it's tasteless. I can't drink anything that isn't sweet. Perhaps I have a drinking problem lol.
Thanks for this upbeat hub! It was a good read! Love your sense of humor!
I love my coffee too. Now I make my tea with loose leaf and put it in a French Press coffee maker from Starbucks. The best tea ever. Make it good and strong let it set add it into a pitcher with sweetener and ice, little lemon if you like and maybe top it off with more water if needed. It aolso makes great coffee, the best. My wife loves this Misty Harbor blackberry wine. I like Scotch, single malt.
"...because it's tasteless" hahahaha thank you for that, thanglynn! That was good. I agree with you--I never choose water--I know I should but I just don't. I only drink the sweet wines. And it has to be GOOD. lol Thanks for stopping by and giving me a smile!! :D
Hey CC :D-- LOL that's a lot of work for some iced tea!! Some of the best sweet tea I've had came from Sonic, believe it or not. Good stuff :)
Wud deff love to take my fav bad girl for a nice drink of wine, many hugs from yer Bad ; )
I haven't tried that. The French press is great hun, invest in one, you'll be glad you did. Maybe I'll try Sonic. I like hot tea also, but sweetened ice tea in summer for moi.
My bad...I like that ;) many hugs to you too sweetie
I may have to do that cc :) I'm not much of a hot tea drinker. Everynow and again I'll heat up a mug but mostly the cold stuff for me :)
Stuff healthtip it wasn't me, I am Bad and its who I intend to be from now on, if some dont like it tough luck x
You have to answer to no one sugar. Be who you are, that's all I've ever asked. :)
Sometimes I don't even know who I am, is that bad ; )
as in you drink too much wine and forget? then yes, that's bad ;)
you went to confession, hope you had sobered up al little. great hub, felt like i was in your living room with you
Thanks, PL ;) yeah, I was sobered up...for the most part. I was all good so long as I didn't close my eyes during the prayers! LOL
I kicked the coffee habit for years. Drank only tea (not made in the coffee maker - geez) and I love ice tea too. I usually have a pitcher of it in the fridge, and not too sweet either like my fellow southerners like it--just a little. But one day I decided to get out the old espresso machine--it was delicious, by the way--and just like that I became a heavy coffee drinker once again. While my wife will only drink Starbucks french roast at 8 bucks a pound, I have found my favorite to be a Cuban espresso roasted in Brooklyn, priced at a whopping...wait for it...$2.50 a pound. I love it so what can I say? Money truly is no object with me. Good stuff, Janetta!
Is caffeine a vice? Gosh, they're awfully loose with that "vice" classification. No wonder I have so many of them!
Hey Chris! $2.50 a pound?!? wow! That's a heck of a lot better than 8 bucks LOL And what's wrong with makin' my tea in the coffeepot?? haha
I like my tea sweet. Did I say sweet? I meant SWEET. I won't tell you how much sugar I add to my sweet tea because you may stop talking to me lol
Hey
I'm with you re the coffee and wine!!! I love the smell of coffee brewing....hmmm.....and then savouring it.....better finish this comment and go and have the first one of the day!!! Dunno about the cold stuff though. That's just plain wrong in my world!!! Te he
Nice hub.
haha reading your comment, travelespresso, made my mouth water! I'm going to have to go make a pot of coffee now!! lol
Hope you enjoyed your pot of coffee as much as I enjoyed my steaming hot long black before breakfast. Tis a daily treat!
Not nearly as much as the glass of wine I'm having now!! LOL Darn that Apple wine...

Ice tea? ICE TEA? *yaks up* Janetta how can anyone like that stuff? It was made for the Brits. We hated it. No one drinks a cold cuppa. So it seems like you guys and the Portuguese love it?!
Stick with coffee delightful one. And as for wine - you should try 'Vinho Verde' or green wine. Aboslutely delicious and soooo wonderfully potent :)
What a great, chatty hub Miss Pretty! Go make a coffee. And leave the nasty tea where it belongs ... in the shop!
Big huge MWAH!
