Bowling balls come in a lot of different colors with several types of cover stock and types of reactions. The way you bowl can be controled by the type of bowling ball you purchase.

You say, “Why should I purchase a bowling ball when I can use a ball from my bowling center?” The ball you grab from the rack each time you bowl, sometimes is not there. Someone else is using the same ball. You think the ball fits your fingers and thumb pretty good, but….your span is probably way off causing you to grasp the bowling ball too long and not release it soon enough for a good roll and pin action.

When you purchase a bowling ball, your hand will be measured by inserting your 2nd and 3rd fingers and your thumb into a black bowling ball with rows of finger holes and thumb holes. This measures the size of your fingers and thumb and also measures the distance between them. This is called your span and the bowling ball must lay flat on the palm of your hand. Your new ball will be drilled with these measurements and your ball will fit your hand well, whether you are right or left handed.

Bowling balls come in many weights, such as 8lb, 10lb, 12lb, 14lb, and 16lb. Certain bowling balls come in 11lbs, 13lbs, and 15lbs. You should purchase a weight that feels right for you.

Now, we can discuss the types of bowling balls available. A plastic bowling ball is an excellent choice for the beginner bowler or a youth bowler. A plastic ball will basically go straight down the center of the lane. Plastic bowling balls come in a wide variety of colors, so you have a choice to fit your particular tastes. Ebonite, and Elite Star are manufacturers of beginning bowling balls. You can get clear plastic balls with your favorite cartoon character, ocean life, Betty Boop, or your favorite football or basketball team, and anything that you can imagine you can buy in a vis-a-ball.

A reactive bowling ball goes long, flips hard and hits like a truck! They are great mid price balls. A reactive ball is meant for an advanced bowler because the ball flips over in the pocket and is a harder ball to control. Hammer, Track, Storm, and Ebonite are the manufacturers for these reactive bowling balls.

The seasoned bowler will want to purchase a high performance bowling ball with a reactive cover for maximun hook and pin action.

When you choose a bowling ball, choose it carefully. You need the bowling ball that fits the way you bowl, your pocketbook, and the weight that is right for you.
