Around 80 years ago first paper coffee filter was created by German housewife named Melitta Bentz. She wanted to remove the bitter taste caused by boiling loose grounds or using the typical method of linen to brew coffee.

Paper coffee filters have many more uses than in the coffee machine. Here is the list:

  1. Grease Sokers: Put your bacon Fries, chicken and pizza in them. They soak out all grease.
  2. Disposable popcorn/snacks bowls- They work great as disposable popcorn/snacks bowls
  3. Remove Makeup: They work great to remove makeup for sexy female.
  4. Putting cake and pie. Serve as plate for cake and pie
  5. Hold Sandwich-They are good hold sandwich than a napkin
  6. Embroidering-Good for backing of embroidering soft fabrics, easy to tear away afterwards. Machine embroidering also.

  8. Paper Towel-They can be used as replacment for Paper Towel
  9. Flower- Just dip your coffee filter in colored water (a few drops of water and a couple drops of food coloring). Let them dry. After they dry, cut them out into flowery shapes.
  10. Popsicle Holder- Push the stick of a Popsicle thru a coffee filter to catch the drips.
  11. Bowl for cooking- Use coffee filters to hold dry ingredients when you are baking. You can get everything ready and it doesn't take your entire countertop.
  12. Potted Plant- Use them under the base of a potted plant to keep the soil from leaking out when you water the plant.
  13. China Plates- Use these filters between plates to prevent scratching.
  14. Liner-Use one as a liner in the new pot when re-potting your plants -- it keeps the finer dirt particles from running out the drain holes
  15. Dishes-Less dishes to wash
  16. Mirror Cleaners-Very handy to clen mirrors
  17. Bowls Cover-They excellent cover when cooking in microwave.

Other Facts:

Coffee filters of paper are made from about 100 g/cm2 crêped paper. The crêping allows the coffee to flow freely between the filter and the filtration funnel. The raw materials (pulp) for the filter paper are coarse long fiber, often from fast growing trees. Both bleached and unbleached qualities are made.

Kinds of Filters:
There are two different shapes of holders/filters: Cone (round top gradually tapering down to the bottom) and Basket (circular holder/filter with a flat bottom). What filter shape you use depends on your coffeemaker.

In general, cone shaped holders/filters are recommended as they ensure optimal coffee saturation and extraction versus basket shaped holders/filters.

Paper versus Permanant Filters:
Although your coffeemaker may have come with a built in coffee filter, paper filters will brew the most flavourful cup.

Paper Filters:
Paper filters are the best way to brew coffee utilizing the drip method. They do the most thorough job in removing particulates and effectively trap bitter sediments for a smoother less bitter cup of coffee. In addition, paper filters allow you to use any type of grind while permanent filters require courser grinds. Finer grind coffees have a larger surface area exposed to the water so it provides a richer cup of coffee. Some permanent filters also transfer foreign taste and odour to your coffee.

Who would have thought there was so many uses for a coffee filter, I guess if you give it enough thought then there are alternative uses for pretty much anything.

I might just make this a parlor game at my next party. Give them a coffee filter and some crayons and glue and tell them to make something. It'll be a real ice breaker. Thanks for the ideas Lgali.

Another reason for paper filters. It absorbs some of the wax that comes out of the ground beans during the drawing time and less bitter taste.
