It is a phrase most of us have heard for years. For some people it is just a meaningless phrase. Some people have a vague idea of what it sounds like but don’t know how it is used. There is quite a bit to learn if you want to know all about white noise.
White noise is a sound that is made up of all the frequencies in audible sound. That is, it contains all the frequencies from about 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Because there are more Hz per octave the higher the frequencies go, white noise seems to contain more of the higher frequencies than the lower ones. It does not, but it seems to because it plays all Hz at the same level. It is playing every one of the tones a person can hear—thousands and thousands of them—all at the same time. In this way, white light is like it; because it is a mixture of all visible color the same as white noise combines all audible frequencies.
So, what good is white noise? White noise has long been used to mask other sounds. Its constant, pleasant sound allows it to cover up other more troublesome noises. It has been used to quiet babies to help them sleep. It is especially good for colicky babies. It can hide nighttime noises like barking dogs or traffic. It has also been used by students working on their lessons, especially students with attention deficit disorder. It is good for people who suffer from the buzzing in the ears of tinnitus. The sound masks the ear noises. It does the same for people with hyperacusis, which is a condition where all sounds seem too loud. Another quite different use of white noise is in offices where it is used as a privacy device to keep eavesdropping to a minimum.
Most people who know about white noise are familiar with the home methods of achieving it. Some people will use a fan year round to cover up the nighttime noises or to mask the ear ringing or their tinnitus. Some have tried the static found on radios or TV’s. Others just know they sleep better with the sounds of the ocean or the woods surrounding them. These people will look forward to their vacations with great enthusiasm.
There are many other ways to make white noise. These include hearing aid type and tabletop sound generators, and white sound CD’s and MP3’s. These can be helpful to people in many different circumstances. You may just find a reason to know all about white noise.
