Other Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide has a large number of uses as an industrial disinfectant, as a hair and coloring agent in salons, and can be used in food grade form to address certain types of bodily ills. It is considered highly effective in treating candidiasis albicans, or systemic yeast infection. It is powerful in treating bacterial and virus infections, including Swine Flu, or H1N1 virus. But in order to use hydrogen peroxide for any internal purposes, it's extremely important that you obtain and know how to use food grade hydrogen peroxide. Food grade peroxide is much more powerful—usually 35% solution—which will burn skin if it comes in contact. Misused, food grade strength can be lethal. Used safely, it can be a powerful healer. More information can be obtained here. Grocery store and pharmacy versions of hydrogen peroxide, though one tenth the strength of food grade, are very adequate for the uses they are intended.

This simple, inexpensive 2% or 3% version found in grocery stores and pharmacies is a great value for whitening teeth. I find that a 12 to 16 ounce bottle will last about a month, used about every other day. That's about a dollar a month!

A Little Known Tip for Whitening Teeth

Hydrogen peroxide, the kind in the brown bottle at the grocery store or pharmacy, is very inexpensive. I usually find if for about a dollar a bottle. It's usually a 2% or 3% strength, and is suitable for a number of disinfectant and bleaching purposes. However, it is NOT for internal use, so DON'T swallow it! The reason is because the grocery/pharmacy versions contain stablizers which are not edible, although one of the recommended uses in the directions is to use it as a mouth rinse.

As a mouth rinse, it's one of the most affordable things for whitening teeth that I have ever found. Simply put about a half to full teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide in your mouth just before you get in the shower in the morning. Don't swish it around, just keep it at the front of your mouth, around your front teeth. Hydrogen Peroxide will foam as it sits in your mouth. Foaming is a result of it killing bacteria and releasing oxygen bubbles as it works. At the same time, it has a bleaching effect on your teeth. Spit out the foamy left overs after about 5 minutes.

Don't keep hydrogen peroxide in your mouth for more than about 5 to 7 minutes at a time. It can cause oxidization of the tissues in your mouth and gums and leave them quite sore for a few days. You don't want to destroy tissues, you only want to freshen your breath and whiten your teeth.

You can do this just about every day or so when you shower. If you find that your mouth becomes a little sore, it means you're using it too frequently, or holding it in your mouth for too long. Simply cut back and adjust usage.

You will begin to see results of whiter teeth within two weeks—just about the same as any other teeth whitening product. Once you're satisfied with how white your teeth are, you can discontinue use. And, of course, you can use it again anytime as needed.

Hydrogen peroxide is indeed a friend in our homes. It's the best for cuts and small wounds, for small infections in the mouth. Now this new use sounds great, I wonder though if it's not too aggressive for the mouth's flora.

Thank you for the comment.

I think your point may be valid. However, I find that if I focus on my teeth instead of my whole mouth, most of my mouth is not being effected for 5 to 7 minutes at a time, rather, only near my teeth. I may be wrong, but perhaps it's not affecting mouth flora too drastically. This may be a good subject for further investigation.

Thanks for your comment!

Oh, I started using it, but just for a minute or two. I don't know if it will whiten my teeth very quickly but I'm not in a hurry, they don't need a lot of whitening. I'll try the trick of leaving the liquid just on the teeth area ... Thank you again for the hub.
