Being a New York high school chemistry tutor can be a good supplemental income if you are in college or in high school and the job pays.  It doesn’t always pay money but in most cases it does.  In order to make money teaching or assisting people with their learning there are a few things that you need to know to succeed. 

The first thing you need to consider when someone approaches you and asks if you can help them with a subject is if you are good at the subject.  If you do not know the subject matter well or you failed the last class, you might think about getting some assistance yourself.  It is good to work in a study group but you cannot charge people if you are not versed in the subject matter.  If math comes really easy for you then you might be a good candidate to help someone else with theirs. The goal is to understand the subject matter and have the capabilities to do it.

Being a teacher or a helper with a subject does not mean that you are going to do someone’s work for them.  It means that you are going to help them understand how to do it so they can do their work on their own.  If you do the work for the student then they will learn nothing and not appreciate you in the long run.  When you teach people how to do something or you assist with tutoring you must have very good communication skills.  You need the ability to explain things in a way that is simple for them to understand.  If you have someone really far behind or at a very low level it may be difficult for you to communicate on their level.  You need to be able to break things down and explain them well.  If you cannot help someone understand a topic then you may not be a good candidate to teach a subject one on one.

You must have good study habits when you are tutoring other students. You cannot charge someone for your time to help them with their Algebra and then come over to their home with the newest video game right off the shelf.  You must show up to their home prepared to study and only willing to study.  Many students will do whatever they can to distract you and move the focus from the work at hand to something fun and less boring.  As a student teacher, you need to have the ability to not be distracted and keep the other person on task with their work.  This can be done by holding strict rules with your tutoring lessons.  Don’t allow the person ever to mess around or it may be difficult to get back on track every time you meet.
