Mark Hoppus
Markus Allan Hoppus, or Mark Hoppus, a third of the band pop punk band Blink 182 is a native of California. He started exploring music at an early age, when he got his first bass guitar at the age of 15 from his dad. Despite not having any formal training in bass playing, he was able to play bands like the Descendents, The Cure, and Bad Religion.
He did covers for The Cure when he sand in the band Pier 69. He was also with another band called The Attic Children in ’88.
Blink 182 music was born in 1992. He met Tom DeLonge in that year when he moved to San Diego. Tom was a friend of Mark’s sister. The two hit it off instantly. And because Tom has been wanting to be in a band for a while, Mark started playing with Tom in his home garage together with the band’s original drummer, Scott Raynor.
They came up with two independent albums called “Buddha” and “Cheshire Cat.” They then went mainstream in 1997 with the release of their first studio album “Dude Ranch.”
After years of success with the band Blink 182, Mark found himself doing side projects with Travis after Tom left the band in 2005.
He is currently married to Skye Everly, whom he wed in 2000. They have a son named Jack.
When the band released “Blink 182” there were talks about the band selling out on their fans because they decided to shift gears in this particular album. Though their album received wide respect, it did not do well commercially as the previous albums.
He was quoted saying:
"We've done the same things that we were doing in the begining, and we never wanted our band to stay small. I mean, we want our band to be as big as it can, and I'm not going to die wondering about some kid that calls us a sell-out at a show. I don't have a problem being onMTV, and I don't have a problem being on the radio. I actually like it. So there. And anyone that calls me a sell out is just jealous."
Selling out is not the term to describe this particular album. It’s just a musical act aiming to expand their horizon and explore their musicality.
Aside from being a member of Blink 182 and Plus 44 (his side project with Travis Barker), Mark is also a co-owner of Atticus, a popular punk clothing company. He also co-owns Macbeth Athletics. He and Tom are partners in the businesses, though Mark has already sold his shares for both companies.
Being a true-blue music man, Mark started to produce records. He produced the albums for the band Minnesota.
He also appeared in MxPx’s eighth studio album called Panic for the track “Wrecking Hotel Rooms” where he provided back up vocals.
He also ventured into television acting. In 2002, he appeared as a guest actor in the UPN show Haunted. He also did a movie in 2008 called “One Nine Nine Four.”
You can also add columnist in his resume. “Beyond Us” was his column for Risen Magazine’s March-April and May-June 2005 publications.
He also set up a podcast which he called “HiMyNameIsMark” or the “Morning Zoo” where he releases songs by underground bands, giving them a chance to be heard by a bigger audience. He also does band member interviews as well as friends and family members interviews. Here he talks about different things including memories of the events in his life.
Chris Holmes and James Ingram of Plus 44 often join him in the show. The Morning Zoo won the “Best Podcast” award in 2005.
Aside from HiMyNameIsMark, he is busy with the reunion album of Blink 182. Most of you can get updated with what’s happening to Blink 182 and his other stuff by following him on Twitter. He tweets a lot, he admits.
