LCD Flat Screens Contribute to Global Warming Significantly

Yesterday our family went, excitedly, on a trip to the local super electronics store. You know the type I mean. Hundreds of great looking flat screen TV units of almost any imaginable size.

We had just about selected a 42 inch HD LCD screen for purchase. Just then two men came into the store and confonted the salesman that was helping us. They had a very heated exchange and we could not avoid to hear what it was about. We are glad that we did hear and because of what they were discussing we never did purchase a flat screen on that day.

The two irate men were complaining to the salesman that he had misrepresented the product he was offering for sale. The salesman was bewildered and asked them how so, because he did not agree with their statement. The customers demanded to speak with the manager and said they wanted there money back.

The thing that the two men, customers of the store, were upset about was the folowing point. The main selling point for the store on the big HD LCD television units is that they are GREEN. Because the store says they used 30 - 40 % less electricity they are sold as very environmentally friendly.

The two upset customers had measured the electricity used by the HD TV set and it was said to be using almost 35% more power than the salesman had told them when he was making his sales pitch. That was bad enough but having discovered this discrepancy in the sales pitch the men had done some checking on the Internet. They had in their hands a printed page that stated the HD LCD television sets contained a gas that was more than 17,000 times more harmful to the atmosphere than Co2 gas is.

The manager of the store refunded their money, in cash and looked in dismay as the two men, plus us and a few other customers left out the door.

I do not know what all this is about but our family does try to do things that are good for our planet. It is fairly upsetting to find product touted as GREEN and eco friendly could be some of the worse products possible for our fight against global warming.
