Crop Circle Crazy

Close your eyes.

Ok, maybe you can't close your eyes for this.

At least try to imagine waking up, wiping the sleep from your eyes, stretching and you look out the window above the kitchen sink, and there it is.

Much to your amazement you discover a large intricately cut crop circle right in your own backyard?

Wouldn't that be absolutely fascinating?

I for one, would love it. And you know what, I wouldn't care who put it there. Aliens? Pranksters? Wouldn't matter. I'd have myself a grand work of art. I would want everyone to see it. Just like in the movie "Field of Dreams", I would want to see cars lined up for miles to come and see it.

What This Hub is Not

This hub is not intended to argue the validity of any theories about the origin of crop circles. Although I find it extremely fascinating, I don't have the time or patience to research the topic thoroughly and come to an intelligent conclusion. I think that's already been tried by many people more educated than I.

I'm sure you've at least heard of some of the suggested origins like UFOs and aliens, freak tornadoes, ball lightning and flat out hoaxes perpetrated by crafty men with nothing better to do in the wee hours of the morning in cold ol' England. I also understand why some people have a need to know who or why. I'm just happy to enjoy them.

What This Hub Is

The hub is merely to introduce you way to enjoy the beauty and artistic side of crop circles which I feel is best seen and appreciated via Google Earth. (See my hub about Google Earth!)

I hope you enjoy the 20 specimens in the video below. There is a poll at the end that asks you to vote for your favorite. Enjoy!

If you're really into crop circles and looking for a holiday destination this summer check out the links I've included. One of them has a fascinating tour scheduled for July. That sounds like fun to me!

I love crop circles, they are so fascinating. Don't know how, don't know why but they're great!

I agree! I almost think knowing the truth about them would spoil them a little. I like the mystery. When you watch the video you appreciate how close many of them are to major highways. I may have driven past some of them and never known they were there.

If I was a farmer I would be mad but I really liked the movie Signs and that was a bit freaky.

When doing a little of the research for this hub yesterday, I read about a farmer whose property happened to be close to Stonehenge. He charged admission to his crop circle and made 30,000 pounds (about $44000 right now). He reported that was way more than the crop was worth.

Yeah, the movie Signs was pretty freaky.

I am a big fan of crop circles and I have studied them.  Some are undoubtedly done by pranksters or "crop artists" if you prefer, but to my mind, some are just as undoubtedly real.  Some are just too complicated to have been completed in a single night without leaving a trace of massive human movement.  Then there is the matter of "bent but not broken,"  and then that in some cases, the soil is radioactive.  Perhaps more mystifying is that the seed pods are exploded. I don't have an opinion of what causes them, but I like them, even if made by humans.

That video was totally cool!  Thanks for a hub of great fun!

Very strange and mysterious! As you say, even if they're not a sinister sign of alien visitations, they're still great art! Fantastic video. Thanks for posting.

Christoph, I agree. I read up about them and yes, some are pranksters who admit doing it, but I also agree that some are far to intricate to be done without detection in a single night. They are fascinating.

Anna Marie, Google Earth is amazing. I wrote another hub about that. You can see so many things with it. There are tons more crop circles to see on YouTube too.

Ajor, I wrote a hub about a few of the places I've seen on Google Earth. I'm always finding new ones. Some places aren't as easy to see because of the trees. But, what you can see is utterly amzing. You have to check it out!

Amanda, whether it's alien or not is part of the intrigue. Part of me hopes it is. They are just such great works of art!

Writer Rider, when you figure it out, let us all know, okay?

All of you, thanks for stopping by and commenting! I appreciate it!

I tried to make a crop circle in my parents' acrage when their tractor broke down and the grass got a couple of feet high. All I managed was a trail for the kids' battery powered vehicles (the riding lawnmower for the tween). Nobody appreciates hard work anymore....:-)

I think after you and I get our party business going, you should branch out into the travel agency business. Since I've met you, my list of vacationing sites has increased two-fold! I'll be vacationing well into my twilight years if you keep this up!!!!!

Cool stuff.

PM, you're too funny! I would love to have seen your crop circle! That's the thing, even if these are done by prankters they are truly the unsung artists of the world. I couldn't make the things they make in a month working 24/7. These are created in a single night.

I know, we can have a party business that incorporates travel! If people don't want to GO to these places, we bring the places to them! I think we're on to something!
