Who is Shigeru Miyamoto?
Shigeru Miyamoto is a pioneer in video game creation, production and design. Many developers call him the "Disney of gaming." He has created the Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong and F-Zero franchises just to name a few. He is also the creative force behind Pikmin and Star Fox. He also developed the Nintendogs franchise along with the recent Nintendo Wii hit Wii Music. Miyamoto began his career with Nintendo in 1977 as a graphics artist. Radar Scope, a coin-operated arcade game, was one of his first designs to make it big in Japan although it was not successful in the United States. The Radar Scope game engine was the leading design behind the first arcade version of Donkey Kong.
What has Shigeru Miyamoto done?
Miyamoto is best known for creating two of the most popular video game series in history: The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. The Legend of Zelda spans more than 14 games, starting with a self-title release, and has created a universe in fandom all its own. Many Legend of Zelda gamers have played since the original games were released on the Nintendo Entertainment System and have followed Miyamoto as he has brought the character of Link to console after console.
He is an industry leader who knows how to make video games and how to target the audiences behind them. He has a strong work ethic, focusing on one video game at a time but working on various projects with a group of collaborators to come up with new ideas, new concepts and new ways of letting gamers interact with their game environments. He is known for starting from scratch when he feels a game's overall function is lacking or not working.
Miyamoto currently works as Nintendo's General Manager. He oversees the development and production of a majority of Nintendo titles all over the world as well as coordinates with game developers on new projects and hardware for the Nintendo Wii console. Currently, Miyamoto is working on the next Legend of Zelda game for release on the Wii in 2010 as well as Spirit Tracks for the Nintendo DSi for release in the winter of 2009.
What does Shigeru Miyamoto think about video games?
While some game developers would jump at the chance of creating and playing video games all day, Shigeru Miyamoto tends not to play games. He does play the banjo and guitar. He is also a semi-professional breeder. In fact, his Sheepdog was the guiding force behind the development of Nintendogs. Miyamoto fiercely supports the gaming industry and maintaining Nintendo's high quality standard for game releases especially concerning the Nintendo Wii and has often compared critics downplaying the role of video gaming in a similar fashion of those that deemed rock and roll bad for kids.
