my proud moment

My meeting with Mother Teresa is the proudest moment of my life and I do not think there will be any other occasion in my life that would super-cede this proud moment.Actually it was just my luck that I went near her and spoke to her.

I had read a lot about Mother Teresa and her services and as a young girl who was enjoying life to the core just could not imagine that a young girl can leave her country her friends and relatives and come to India to save the poor and the neglected people of the society.

When I was doing my post graduation suddenly a flash went through my mind and I decided that if I get a job my first month's entire salary I would donate to "Nirmal Hridhay and my starting pay was Rs 1000 and unfortunately that month I joined only on the second so the salary I received was not the entire Rs 1000 but a little less then that and I sent it to her address in Kolkatta.

After a fortnight I received the cheque with a letter came stating that the check was bounced and I was taken aback by this because there were enough funds in the bank and this salary is not a big deal. Even the bank staff were surprised that how it could happen and apologised to me.

As this was going on I got my next month's salary which was of course Rs 1000 and I sent another check to Mother Teresa's institution and in a couple of days I got a letter thanking me for helping her to help "the poorest of the poor" (she always used this phrase when there was any mention about her service) and she sent a photograph along with her letter which had her blessings too.

The photo she sent is the most cherished thing among all my possessions. It had Mother Teresa's face in profile giving more prominence to her hands where she held a baby and the lines " I hold you in my heart and hands and may God bless you" This one line spoke everything. Always the words that are not spoken carry more value than the words that are spoken. A stunning silence is more significant than the sound and fury isn't it.

After my studies I became a journalist and around that time Mother Teresa came to Chennai and at that time I had become a journalist - sort of junior reporter. When I knew that the editor was toying whom to sent to cover her programs I went straight to the editor and requested my deep desire to meet Mother Teresa and I promised him a good story

Next morning exactly at 8 A.M. I was supposed to meet her and I was there around 7-30 A.M. itself and my heart was pounding and I was really skeptical whether I could really make the meeting worthy of remembrance. I still remember those moments.

Exactly at 8 A.M Mother came to the room where I was seated and Iimmediately I stood up in reverence. She came to me and kissed on my forehead and the first sentence she spoke was "may God bless you and if God blesses always remember the poorest of the poor" and to me it was like a dream.

The interview went on for twenty minutes and Mother was affable, friendly and of course lovable. After this I had met several important personalities in my life but to me the moment I met Mother Teresa is the one I will not forget till I breathe my last.
