Who is watching the FDA?

Who is Watching the FDA to Make Sure Your Health is Really Considered?

The problem with an agency that has no regulatory back up is that they can do what ever they want and justify their actions how ever they choose. All other businesses that concern our health or safety have another agency in place to "check" the actions and make sure everything is on the up and up.

For instance, airplanes are built, licensed and flown according to standards set by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). When a plane crash occurs, a different agency the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) steps in to establish the facts find the cause and make recommendations for avoiding future crashes. The assumption is that a second, independent agency is needed because the FAA would have a conflict of interest investigating crashes of planes it had approved and licensed. Makes sense right?

In drug safety there is only one agency, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). This agency approves pharmaceuticals. There is no separate agency that investigates injuries and deaths caused by those pharmaceuticals. The FDA is also responsible for that.

Unfortunately, the FDA does not have the capacity or has very limited capacity to conduct tests and studies on health problems that are related to prescription drug use. They rely almost completely on the drug companies to provide data on deaths and illnesses caused by their own products.

Isn't this is like asking a 4 year old child to tell us who broke the lamp?

The drug companies are never going to take responsibility for drug deaths or other side effects that are directly related to the use of their drugs. That would be financial suicide. They will look for some other factor in your life that could be responsible for the problem. Are you overweight, do you have a stressful job, do you smoke or drink? One of these factors will likely be the cause of the death or complication. That takes the drug companies off the hook and makes you, (us) totally responsible for their mistakes.

So... Who is watching your back? No one but you. Not even you if you aren't researching your health conditions and just blindly taking pills because someone told you to take them. This is your body and your life, don't put it completely in the hands of independent companies who sole reason for being is to profit. Consideration for you, your life and your health do not fit into their financial budget.

It isn't likely that the above scenario is going to change any time in the future. At least not to benefit the consumer. It is up to you to look out for you and your family when it comes to your health. The internet is full of valuable information on alternative health remedies. Very astute observation. While I think the FDA does a lot of good work, there's no question that its sympathies are with the drug companies. I take a handful of prescription drugs every day, but I wonder if they're really necessary. I don't have enough information to counter my doctor's insistence that I have no other option. I like your disclaimer, but I didn't really think your opinions were approved by the FDA.

I am sure my opinions are not approved by the FDA.

There is plenty of information to be found on the internet to research your health. There are also lots of Naturopathic Doctors available online and off line to help you re-evaluate your health. Please take the time to look into alternatives. Your body will thank you.
