Why "Best Of" Lists Don't Work
49Today's posting is a continuation of yesterday's rant on this top 100 fantasy book list I found. I realised that there are a few more things I wanted to say.
First off, the idea of any kind of "best of" list is annoying to me. I've never understood how someone else, or any number of someone else's, using whatever formula they've devised, can tell me what book or movie or CD or band or team is better than the other. It's all relative, really. I adore Stephen R. Donaldson. His work is breathtaking and brilliant, vibrant and real. Yet on this list, Donaldson is ranked #22, TEN slots lower than Christopher Paolini's Eragon. Paolini has promise, but his work is childish in comparison...IN MY OPINION.
Ah, there's the rub and my point. Just because I don't like Paolini, does that make him any less important to you if you like him?
Furthermore, concerning this fantasy list, why are writers like Stephen King, Anne Rice, Paulo Coelho, Diana Galbaldon and Stephanie Meyers included? Last I checked, they don't write fantasy. There is more to fantasy than just writing something that isn't scientifically plausible.
I'm sure to have more to say on this list and this site. Stay tuned for more.
