Why Do People Close The Bathroom/Toilet Door, Even Though They Are Home Alone?

"Why do people close the bathroom door when they are home alone?"

I can't believe I never thought about making a hub about this as this is probably my specialty

The BTBN

We all hear about the burglars who come when everyone's away and steal your expensive items, etc.. However there are other types of burglars too. They're the bathroom-time burglars. Whenever you're home alone and go to a bathroom, a hidden camera they installed while the house was empty tells them it's time to make a move. Of course to keep it going quickly, they have special spies located (and rotated) nearby. You may think your neighbor is a nice person, but there's a possibility one of your neighbors might actually be from the BTBN (Bathroom Time Burglars Network). They are trained to steal little items quickly. They're also trained to be friendly with you so that they may scope out the small items of middle-worth beforehand. While this happens for everyone, and happens to be the reason why certain items mysteriously disappear, only those who close the bathroom door have caught on to the BTBN conspiracy, and close their bathroom door just in case the BTBN agent might be a rogue agent who'll seek to do more than just petty theft.

Determined FURBALL Agent

P.E.T.S

As Spryte reminded us in Project F.U.R.B.A.L.L, cats are actually intelligence agents spying on your every move. What she failed to mention is that even dogs and other pets are also part of sister associations. Together, each organization gathers intelligence and reveals it to the Mother Network: P.E.T.S (People's Every Trait Study). As you can tell from its name, their aim is to learn about all Human traits - whether it be dog lovers, cat lovers, and even animal haters (do you really think those random animals in the gardens are there just to terrorize gardens?).

What does this have to do with people closing their bathroom door? To get a full analysis of human behavior, many pets are encouraged to observe aspects of all human lives. Perhaps that explains why if I leave my bathroom door open, my cat will come in and glare at me while I try to roll the toilet paper; he will even attempt to do it himself in order to understand why I would do such a tedious task. Closing the door is the only way to true privacy when it comes to these PETS agents - some of them won't even take the closed door for an answer and will try to get you to open the door by any means necessary (sniffing, scratching, meowing, paw reach, etc..)

Satellite Paranoia

This is probably the most time-restraining reason to close the door. Let's face it: Paranoia may tell you to close the door, but satellites can find other ways to peek. That's why the people who close the bathroom door in case of hidden cameras accessible via satellites also close the windows, put curtains, and check all of the drawers for any visible hidden cameras and wires. It's a tough job, but privacy's a privilege many refuse to give away.

On a more Serious Note

Real reasons people close the bathroom door

  1. Keep the smell contained. If your bedroom is close to the bathroom, you don't want the smell to find its way in. Keeping the door closed (and making sure to use a spray before opening it again) is the only way.

  2. Fear of Horrible timing. Whether it's because you're the type of person to stay a long time in the bathroom, or simply because your family/roommates have a 6th sense, the last thing you want is for someone to come home while you're in the bathroom and see you.

  3. Pets...Yes, that was a real reason. I don't like how my cat keeps wanting to be cuddled just when I'm in the bathroom, or how he plays with the toilet roll, or how he keeps wanting me to turn the faucet on. I want peace of mind darnit!
  4. Habit: Some people don't even realize they close the door, or if they do they're so used to it they can't imagine not having it closed.

My husband and I were just talking about this the other day. He complained about every pet in the house coming in the bathroom when he's there and he can't get out of the shower without stepping over a big black dog and a cat sitting on the counter pushing everything off.

I told him to try closing the door that's what I do. Enjoy your hub.

Phew, I first thought the first few reason were legitimate. :p

Great Hub

The first few reasons are legitimate. However if I made them seem too serious it might cause a panic uproar.

Great Hub!

I have been affected by the "terrible timing" one. It wasn't a big deal (it was actually funny!), but I wouldn't want it to happen with the wrong person!

For those of us with a wife and two young children hiding behind a locked bathroom door is the only way you can garantee alone time !

when I'm home alone and reasonably sure to stay that way I don't! However, if I'm on the throne and I hear the front or back door unexpectedly the door is within reach without even standing up (one of the advantages of being poor is that our bathroom is almost big enough to turn around in).

Yeah, small bathrooms are great. I like them way better than big bathrooms - smaller is just more intimate.

Though sometimes (ok, 99% of the time) my mother doesn't close the bathroom door when we're at home, and since it's a small bathroom, if you pass by you know you'll end up looking right into her. Seriously, I think people who don't close the door when there whole family's home are seriously weirder than people who close the door when they're alone.

Your totally funny and right but my reason is a 18 month old son who follows me everywhere and usually gets into some sort of mischief while I'm in there or wants to sit in my lap so I close the door .I have not got a choice anymore.

This was a good read thanks for sharing

Well young children are people, so technically you are not home alone ;)

However I guess in a way little kids are pets - they can not realize that some places are private.

Squimpie!!

OMG! You are 100% right! *smacks forehead* If I close the bathroom door, there's a crowd of furries waiting outside when I exit...or worse, they stick their paws underneath the door trying to reach me. I gave up closing the door and just let them have their way. And all this time...I thought it was because they were concerned that I would fall in....what a gullible fool I've been! :)

Also - thanks for the plug *hugs* You are a gem!

Well I'm sure the furries also care if you fall in. After all, if you fall in and get hurt, they will get in trouble with the agency won't they?

And I had to link to Furball. ^^ It was such a great hub and it's totally related to this hub.

And I was just reading my own hub....wow I need to check my spelling more often....

When my daughters were pre-school age and I was trying to keep them off sugar, I took a candy bar into the bathroom once and locked the door so I could enjoy it without sharing or guilt -- ha! The 4-year-old stood outside the door and listened and said, "What are you doing in there? What is that noise?" because candy wrappers do crinkle upon removal. I swear they could smell the chocolate through the door ... and it still tasted delicious!

My cat does that , too. That's why I close the door. It's difficult to pull up your evil pants, if there's a cat curled up in them! Dontcha just hate when that happens?

basketcase, thanks for the comment and really...I think that children pretend to be pets at times.

@BT. Perhaps your cat is evil and is attracted to evil pants? You should try using good pants.

I've never had a cat curl up in my pants...thankfully, although one of my FURBALLs, Jack, is fascinated with the "flush". Luckily he hasn't figured out how to do it himself yet or I'm sure my water bill would be astronomical.

privateeye, my mom's one of those. It's VERY uncomfortable especially since the bathroom is right across from my bedroom....So I'll be coming out of my room and BAM "Mooooooooooooooooommmm!!!!! Close the door"

On the bright side, she often doesn't turn the light on.
